Speaking Session Testimonials
The Japanese Speaking Sessions are a great way to overcome shyness when talking to strangers in a foreign language. We get to speak to a variety of native speakers, some of which are easier or harder to understand. And that’s okay, because everyone knows they are there to improve. There are different topics each week, so we also learn a lot about each other’s cultures, social norms and fun facts. The Japanese Speaking Sessions are quite special!

Arai-sensei organises monthly Japanese Speaking Sessions with members of London's Japanese community, which is a great opportunity to socialise while practicing the language in a fun way. Recently she found a way to include beginners like me in those get-togethers, and after overcoming some initial shyness I very much enjoyed using my still limited vocabulary to make some basic small talk.

These are great fun and a fantastic edition to the lessons. I have only attended one but I cannot wait for the next. Also a very generous activity considering it is a free occasion. Subject matter is applied to each one for everyone to base their discussions around. Traditional sweets and snacks included! I have not had this opportunity elsewhere.

The Japanese speaking sessions offer a unique opportunity to mix with native Japanese speakers in a relaxed setting. They come from a range of different backgrounds, and without exception are very interesting to talk to. In addition to practicing Japanese conversation, the speaking sessions always broaden my perspective on Japanese culture and ways of thinking. Thanks so much to the volunteers for giving us their time.

The Japanese Speaking Session for Beginners was one of my first attempts of speaking Japanese with native speakers. I was very nervous, but I knew that it would be a great way to build my confidence. Once I introduced myself, there was no need to feel nervous as all the native speaker volunteers were very kind, patient and supportive in my goal of learning their native language. After the session, I felt more confident in my abilities and determined to improve for next time.
The session was also a good opportunity to learn about the differences between our cultures through gestures such as bowing. I had not had the chance to practice these humilities, but I found that they are so important in forming a better understanding of the Japanese language.
I look forward to the next session and highly recommend the session to other beginners learning Japanese!
