Thanks to everyone, Arai Academy is celebrating its 10th anniversary! - From the time I had no courage nor confidence

We celebrated the 10th anniversary of Arai Academy of Japanese Studies! A tea master came from Japan and held a tea ceremony for us :) Everyone enjoyed my handmade cake, and I am very happy to have shared my gratitude! And thank you very much for celebrating together, your warm messages and all the gifts!

Looking back, 20 years ago, when I was a new teacher teaching Japanese at a university in the UK, I was only able to focus on things in the classroom. After some experience, I thought it would be wonderful if people who started studying Japanese could enjoy learning at their own pace, gain confidence in speaking and continue as long as they wish, and most importantly, they feel that “I'm glad I studied Japanese! It changed my life!” That's why I started thinking about having my own academy 10 years ago.

This is because many students in BA in Japanese drop out before graduating in four years. And over the past decade, more people have started studying on their own using Japanese textbooks and apps, but many lose confidence and give up, thinking, “It's impossible for me.”

So, I was filled with a passionate desire to support each student to help them feel confident so that they could continue to enjoy learning Japanese!

However, my parents were civil servants and believed that stability was important, and there were no businesspeople around me, so I didn't have the courage to start an education business. 10 years ago, every time I saw a store while walking, I was impressed by how brave the owner must have been, but I also felt a great deal of anxiety about starting my own business, thinking, “They must have been very confident.”

Anyway, I needed the courage to support all Japanese learners to enjoy the journey, gain confidence and continue learning Japanese for as long as they wanted.

When I started, I was very happy to have those highly motivated students, and everyone enjoys our lessons! This gives me a full of energy.

I also asked other Japanese teachers to teach, and they have great passion for teaching Japanese, and I am very grateful that the students are happy as a result.

I wanted to give my students the opportunities to speak Japanese with the natives and we also received support from many Japanese people living in London, and about 30 people participated in each of the “Learning Session in Japanese” in London. Now, we enjoy the sessions online.

I have had the privilege of receiving direct contracts from world-renowned companies in Japan and the UK, teaching executives. They had busy schedules, but they were happy to have gained the confidence to speak Japanese within the limited time, so I was very happy for them too.

Now I am glad that I started Arai academy 10 years ago even though I was so scared.

When starting something new, it’s normal that we feel scared at first. However, I now realize that if you take action with your own belief, people who feel the same as you do will come along. And in this age of social media, my followers also support me, and it’s amazing to have you and we can grow together!

I admire the courage that you started studying Japanese! Even though many people love Japan, few actually start learning Japanese. I am deeply moved that my students have continued their lessons for so many years.

I really want to say thank you to all my students who are leaning Japanese with my online self-study course, Master Speaking Japanese! I can feel your amazing dedication for the learning journey.

My staff also say things like, “Please make me your first disciple” and “Arai-sensei is my master.” With such trust, I want to become someone who can provide even more support.

おかげさまでArai Academy10周年！－勇気も自信もなかったあの日から

先日、当アカデミーの10周年のお祝いをしました。日本からお茶の先生が来てくださって、お茶会もしていただき、私の手作りのケーキも喜んでいただき、感謝の気持ちが伝わったようでとても嬉しいです！たくさんのプレゼントもありがとうございます！

思えば20年前、イギリスの大学で新人教師として日本語を教えていた時は教室の中のことで精一杯でした。経験を積むにつれて、自分は日本語の勉強を始めた人がそれぞれのペースで楽しく学び続けられ、自信を持って話せるようになって、「日本語を勉強していて良かった！人生が変わった！」と感じてもらえたらいいなと思うようになりました。それで、10年前に独立を考え始めました。

たくさんの大学の生徒たちが大学4年生になって卒業するのが難しいことや、ここ10年では一人で勉強する人が多くなりましたが、日本語の教科書やアプリを使っても、自信を失って「自分にはむりだ」と諦めてしまう人が多いことがわかったからです。

それで、とにかくみんなに自信を感じてもらえて、一人一人の生徒が日本語の勉強を楽しく学び続けられるようにサポートできたらいいなという熱い想いでいっぱいでした。

でも、両親は公務員で安定が大事だと考えていたし、周りにビジネスをしている人が全然いなかったので、教育ビジネスを始めることに勇気がなく、10年前の私は歩いて見かけた店を見るたびに、「このオーナーはすごい勇気があったんだー」と感動したり、でも「自信があったんだろうな」と自分が独立することへの大きな不安とそれでも勇気をふり絞って、日本語を続けたいだけ続けられるようなサポートをしていきたいと感じるようになりました。

始めてみたら、とても熱心な生徒たちとの出会いに感動し、みんなが私のレッスンを楽しんでくれていることが、今でも私にとってのエネルギー源になっています。

私の時間が合わない時など、他の先生にもお願いするようになり、先生方もとても熱心で、おかげで生徒たちも喜んでくれているのでとても感謝しています。

また、頑張っている生徒たちに日本人と話す機会も作ってあげたいと思い、ネイティブと日本語で話す「日本語で学ぶ会」ではロンドンにお住いのたくさんの日本人の方々からもサポートをいただき、毎回30人ほど参加してくださいました。今はオンラインで行っています。

世界的にも有名な日本やイギリスの一流企業とも直接契約をいただき、エグゼキュティブの方々に教えましたが、みなさん忙しくても短期間に自信を持って話せるようになって喜んでくれたことが私にとっても喜びです。

今はあのとき勇気を振り絞って当アカデミーを始めて良かったと思っています。

何かを始めるとき、誰でも最初は怖いですよね。でも、今では自分のやり方を軸に行動し始めれば共感してくれる人が現れるんだと実感しています。そして、SNS時代の今ではフォロワーさんたちもサポートをしてくださって、こんなにたくさんの人たちに出会えて、いっしょに学びを深めていけるというのは最高の気持ちです！

日本語の勉強を始めてくれた皆さんの勇気が素晴らしいです！日本が好きでも日本語を始める人は少ないですから。そして、私の生徒たちは何年もレッスンを続けてくれていて、心から感動しています。
