A Little Japanese Creates Big Trust — Even in the AI Era
Jun 29, 2026In the past, I supported my student living in London during his first business meeting with a Japanese company.
I’ve been in the UK for over 23 years, and I bring the outside perspective — the perspective of someone who deeply understands how European professionals think, communicate, and build trust.
He had been told, “Please speak in Japanese only.” But his Japanese wasn’t perfect — and that is exactly why the first few minutes mattered so much.
We now live in an era where AI can create flawless Japanese sentences, perfect business emails, and beautifully polished presentations. But Japanese business relationships do not begin with linguistic perfection.
What Japanese professionals pay attention to is:
-
the first word
-
the first atmosphere
-
the first sense of distance
In those initial seconds, psychological safety is either created or lost. And that determines about 80% of trust.
That day, he was nervous. So I joined as an interpreter and shaped the “first moment” for him — tone, posture, warmth, and emotional safety.
His Japanese didn’t need to be perfect. In fact, sincerity is often felt more through small, imperfect Japanese.
After the meeting, the Japanese side said:
“We felt we could trust you — both from your emails and from today’s meeting.”
The contract moved forward immediately. What created success was not perfect Japanese, but the human trust born in the first few minutes.
AI Creates Language. Humans Create Trust.
In the AI era, more people assume:
-
“AI can handle the Japanese.”
-
“A perfect presentation will impress Japanese clients.”
But Japanese professionals look at human connection before the project.
If trust is not built at the beginning, they may listen to your presentation politely, but their hearts remain closed. It becomes “just staying until the end of the meeting.”
That’s why— A Little Japanese Goes a Long Way. It doesn’t need to be perfect. A single sincere Japanese phrase can shorten the emotional distance instantly.
Inside × Outside Perspective — A Rare Combination
Next month, I will be hosting a 60‑minute seminar with Maya Matsuoka.
Maya spent 25 years inside Japanese companies as a foreign professional. She brings the inside perspective — the lived experience of how Japanese companies build trust from within.
I bring the outside perspective — shaped by 23 years in the UK, supporting European professionals as they navigate Japanese communication and culture.
Together, these two angles finally allow Japanese business culture to be seen in three dimensions.
