How to Continue Learning Japanese in Your Busy Life

Over the past 20 years of teaching Japanese, I’ve realized something:

People who learn Japanese are almost always busy.

 

Executives, business owners, international project leaders—

people who seem to have no time to study Japanese

somehow continue taking my lessons week after week.

 

Today, I’d like to share how my students manage to keep learning Japanese

without missing lessons, even in their extremely busy lives.

Their creative and sometimes surprising strategies might inspire you too.

 

Watching them, I often feel that learning Japanese has become

a natural part of their daily life.

Just like British people go to their usual pub on weekends,

my students simply go to their “usual Japanese lesson.”

(Though of course, they don’t drink beer during class.)

 

Because lessons are online, I can see where they join from—

and I’m often genuinely surprised:

“Oh no!　You’re joining from there?”

 

Their dedication is something I believe can help anyone

who wants to continue learning Japanese.

 

Student A: Cycling through Hyde Park during the lesson

He is a senior executive who was headhunted in London’s finance industry.

He has continued weekly lessons for ten years almost every week.

 

One day, when the lesson started, I suddenly saw Hyde Park behind him—he was cycling.

 

He had a meeting right after the lesson,　so he joined while moving between locations.

Very Dutch, very natural.

 

He started as a complete beginner,　and now speaks with me 100% in Japanese.

 

Student B: Joining from the dark backseat of an Uber

Another executive in finance.

He often takes lessons while going home in Uber.

 

In the dark car, his face lit only by his phone screen looked a little like a horror movie—but he was completely focused.

 

Even when the driver asked about the Japanese he was speaking, he didn’t mind at all.

 

He simply valued his Japanese practice time.

 

When he arrived home, the connection briefly dropped in the lift, and then he rejoined from his computer. His dedication always impresses me.

 

Student C: SOAS library, inside a car, or in front of a house for sale

A business owner as a Japanese art dealer, and a fellow SOAS University of London graduate with an MA in Japanese Art.

 

One day she joined from the SOAS library—she was researching ukiyo-e for an appraisal.

 

Another day, she was in Camden to sell a house, joining from her car using 4G because the house had no Wi-Fi.

Right after the lesson, she went straight to the sale appointment.

 

Student D: Lessons from anywhere during his Japan travels

He started Japanese at 66, and now at 72 he travels Japan using only Japanese.

 

・Understands Japanese GPS instructions while driving

・Understands 70% of Japanese radio

・Chats with izakaya owners in Japanese

・Joins workshops in Japanese

 

Even during his travels, he never misses a lesson.

 

・From an accomodation in Rishiri Island, stepping out during dinner

・From a hotel in Yakushima

・From anywhere basically

 

Sometimes he even takes lessons at 5 a.m. from his second home in the U.S.

His energy amazes me.

 

Student E: Lessons from Asia business trips, after hospital visits, or from the car

The CEO of the energy company and working with Japanese companies, he joins lessons from Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, and more.

 

Even when boarding a flight soon, he says:

“Could we do just 10 minutes today?”

I didn’t know our lesson time was just before his flight time.

His desire to continue—even a little—is remarkable.

 

He once joined by audio only while driving home from the hospital.

 

He told me, “You gave me the KEY,” because Japanese has become a real business advantage for him.

 

You can continue learning Japanese no matter where you live

・Airport lounges, midnight hotels,

・jet-lagged mornings in Tokyo,

・a lobby in Cairo,

・Hyde Park, bicycles, Ubers, cars, cafés.

 

Truly,　my students will learn Japanese no matter what.

 

And because of that dedication,　students who started from zero　now speak with native speakers—even without living in Japan.

 

🌸 What you need is not a “perfect environment,”

but an environment you can continue in.

 

“I’m too busy.”

“I don’t live in Japan.”

“I don’t know any Japanese people.”

 

These things don’t matter as much as people think.

 

Placing learning gently into your daily life,　and continuing for a long time—that is the closest path to speaking Japanese.

 

If my students’ stories encourage you,　I’m truly happy.

 

Learning Japanese is not something special.

It’s something you quietly place in your daily life　and continue at your own pace.

 

I started Arai Academy of Japanese Studies　with one wish:

that beginners would not drop out,

and that they would someday say,

“I’m so glad I learned Japanese.”

 

That’s why the moment my students say,

“I can speak Japanese!”

is my greatest joy.

何が何でもレッスンを受ける生徒たち

20年間日本語を教えてきて気がついたのは、

日本語を学ぶ人は、忙しい人ばかりだということです。

 

エグゼキュティブ、ビジネスオーナー、国際プロジェクトの担当者など、

「日本語を勉強する暇なんてないのでは？」と思うような人たちが、

なぜか私のレッスンを続けています。

 

今日は、そんな忙しい生活の中で、

どうやって生徒たちがレッスンを休まず続けているのか、

そのユニークで面白い工夫を紹介したいと思います。

 

生徒たちを見ていると、

日本語を学ぶことが “日常の一部” になっているのだと感じます。

イギリス人が週末にいつものパブに行くように、

生徒たちは「いつもの日本語レッスン」を続けているのです。

もちろん、レッスン中にビールは飲みませんが。

 

オンライン・レッスンでつながると、

生徒たちがどんな場所から参加しているのかが分かります。

「え、そんなところから？」と驚くことが本当に多いです。

 

そして、生徒たちの学び続ける姿勢は、

日本語を続けたい皆さんの参考になると思います。

 

Aさん：ハイドパークを自転車で走りながらレッスン

ロンドンのファイナンス業界でヘッドハントされるほどのエグゼクティブ。

10年間、毎週欠かさずレッスンを続けています。

 

ある日、レッスンが始まって、画面を見たら、

いきなりハイドパークを自転車で走っていたんです。

 

レッスン後すぐ会議があるため、

移動しながらレッスンを受けてくれました。

オランダ人らしく、自転車が生活に自然に溶け込んでいます。

 

ゼロ初級から始めて、

今では私と100％日本語で会話できるレベルになりました。

 

Bさん：Uberの暗がりからレッスン（ちょっとホラー）

同じくファイナンス業界のエグゼクティブ。

仕事帰りにUberに乗りながら毎週レッスンを受けています。

 

夜の暗い車内で、

スマホの光に顔がうっすら浮かぶ姿は、

ちょっとホラー映画のようでしたが、

本人は真剣そのもの。

 

運転手に日本語を聞かれても気にせず、

日本語を話す時間を大切にしています。

 

マンションに着くと、

エレベーターで一瞬ネットが切れ、

その後いつもの部屋からパソコンで再参加。

この姿勢には本当に感心します。

 

Cさん：SOAS図書館・車の中・売却予定の家の前からレッスン

日本美術の売買をするビジネスオーナー。

私と同じSOASの卒業生で、日本美術のMAを取得しました。

 

ある日オンラインでつながったら、

いきなりSOASの図書館にいました。

浮世絵の鑑定の調べ物の途中だったそうです。

 

別の日は、

家を売るためにカムデンにいて、

Wi-Fiがない家の前で車の中から4Gでレッスン。

レッスン後すぐ売却の手続きに向かうとのことでした。

 

Dさん：日本旅行中のどこからでもレッスン

66歳で日本語を始め、

72歳の今は日本語だけで旅行を楽しんでいます。

 

・レンタカーでドライブ中、カーナビの日本語がわかる

・レンタカーでドライブ中、日本語のラジオが70％理解できるようになった

・居酒屋のオーナーと日本語だけで会話

・日本語でワークショップにも参加

 

日本旅行中も必ずレッスンを受けます。

 

・北海道・利尻島の宿で晩ご飯の時間を途中、抜け出してレッスン

・屋久島のホテルからなど

 

アメリカの自宅から朝5時にレッスンを受けることもあり、

そのエネルギーには驚かされます。

 

Eさん：アジア出張中、病院帰り、車の中からもレッスン

日本のエネルギー会社とビジネスをしているEさんは、

日本・台湾・シンガポールなど出張先からレッスンを受けています。

 

予定のレッスンの時間に始めると、

「すみませんが、今日は10分だけでもいいですか？」

と、搭乗前など、どんなに忙しくても少しでも続けようとする姿勢が印象的です。

 

病院帰りに車を運転しながら音声だけでレッスンしたことも。

「先生はKEYを与えてくれた」とメッセージをくれるほど、

日本語がビジネスチャンスにつながっていると感じているそうです。

 

🌸どこにいても、日本語は続けられる

空港のラウンジ、真夜中のホテル、

時差ボケの東京、カイロのロビー、

ハイドパーク、自転車、Uber、車の中、カフェのWi-Fi。

 

本当に、

何が何でもレッスンを受ける生徒たちです。

 

そしてその努力が実り、

ゼロ初級から始めた生徒たちが、

日本に住んでいなくても、

今ではネイティブと日本語で会話できるようになりました。

 

🌸 続けるために必要なのは「完璧な環境」ではなく

“続けられる環境を自分で作ること”。

 

忙しいから

日本に住んでいないから

日本人の知り合いがいないから

 

それらは、

日本語を話せるようになるかどうかとは

あまり関係がないようです。

 

日常の中に学びを置き、

それを長く続けること。

 

それが、

日本語を話せるようになるいちばんの近道です。

 

みなさんも、私の生徒たちの話が励みになったら、とても嬉しいです。

 

日本語を学ぶことは、特別なことではなく、

日常の中にそっと置いて、静かに続けていくものだと思っています。

 

私は、

日本語を始めたゼロ・ビギナーがドロップアウトせず、

長く続けられるように、

人生で日本語を学んでよかったと思ってもらえるように。 

その願いだけを胸に、

Arai Academy of Japanese Studies を始めました。

 

だからこそ、

生徒たちが「日本語が話せる！」と嬉しそうに話してくれる瞬間が、

私にとって何よりの喜びです。

これからも、みなさんと一緒にゆっくり成長していきたいと思っています。
