15 Years of 1‑to‑1 Japanese Lessons: A Celebration of Continuity and the Fruits of Long‑Term Learning

Aug 14, 2026

*日本語版は英語に続く

Matt has been taking my one‑to‑one Japanese lessons since before I founded the Arai Academy of Japanese Studies, and this year we celebrated his 15th anniversary as a student.

Our very first lesson took place in London. It was a trial session, and I still remember how happy he looked when he said he wanted to continue. At that time, he had studied Japanese on his own for about three years and had tried a few group lessons, but he still couldn’t speak at all.

Matt has no Japanese friends, colleagues, or partner, and he hasn’t visited Japan once in the past 15 years.

Even so, he can now hold natural conversations with native Japanese speakers.

Many people believe that you must live in Japan to become conversational, but Matt’s story shows that steady, long‑term learning can lead to remarkable results. His dedication is not only inspiring for Japanese learners—it is a model for anyone pursuing a long‑term goal.

🌸 Matt’s Comment

“15 years ago, I was looking for a Japanese teacher for 1‑2‑1 lessons. Arai‑sensei was recommended to me by another Japanese teacher and I was very nervous about our first meeting. Would my (very) basic Japanese be good enough? Would I be able to understand what she was saying? I needn’t have worried. Arai‑sensei put me at ease immediately by speaking in both Japanese and English, and by focusing on my goals and what I wanted to get out of the lessons. Although my goals have changed over time, Arai‑sensei still adapts her lessons to meet my needs and consistently supports me to ensure that I’m always making progress.

The 15 years have flown by. Arai‑sensei is a great educator and businesswoman. I hope to continue learning with her for a very long time.”

🌸 What It Means to Continue for 15 Years

Matt has taken a lesson every week for 15 years.

・During my New Year trips to Japan, he continued lessons online

・When traveling in Egypt, Spain, or Turkey, he joined lessons from his hotel

・When his car broke down or he had family errands, he found a café with Wi‑Fi and joined from there

・When I started the “Japanese Speaking Group” in London, he attended every month—and still joins now that it’s online

By attending lessons and events regularly, he has been able to see his own progress clearly.

One day he simply realized:

“I can speak with native Japanese speakers naturally.”

This is the power of continuity. It applies not only to language learning, but to any long‑term goal.

🌸 Continuity Needs Support and Community

It is difficult to continue alone. Having someone who supports you—or a community that walks with you—makes all the difference.

For this reason, I created Learning Café, a place where Japan lovers around the world can continue their life learning journey with support, calmness, and community.

I also started posting my ‘Kizuki’, gentle reflections on learning and communication.

They are meant to support you when life is busy, when motivation is low, or when you simply want a quiet moment to reset your inner lens.

You are warmly welcome to visit.

🌸 Why I Founded the Arai Academy

The core reason I founded the Arai Academy was to help beginners continue without dropping out,

and to help them feel,

“I can speak Japanese.”

More than anything, I want learners to feel oneday that learning Japanese was one of the meaningful choices in their life.

That is why long, deep relationships like this bring me so much joy.

🌸 Beyond Lessons: A Long‑Term Connection

Matt has attended many of my events over the years— from a ukiyo‑e dealer’s exhibition hosted by my student, to my birthday party, to the Academy’s 10th anniversary celebration,

to supporting the English Study Group for Japanese people.

His learning journey has become part of his life, and part of mine.

🌸 Finally

I hope you continue your own learning gently, steadily, and without pressure.

One day, it will become a meaningful part of your life.

Let’s grow together!

🌸 Arai Academy を始めた理由

Arai Academy of Japanese Studies
