Japan & Easter - My Cultural Experiences

ハッピーイースター！日本ではイースターがあまり知られていませんが、イースターはいろいろな国で祝われていますね。イースターと日本の４月の似ていると思ったことについて３つ書いてみました。

Happy Easter! In Japan Easter isn’t well known, but I’ve experienced it in many countries. In this article, I’d like to share three interesting similarities between Easter and April in Japan.

まずは私がイースターを体験した時の話を紹介します。学生の時、春休みにアイルランドのダブリンに1か月英語学校に留学した時、初めてイースターのチョコレートを食べました。

First, I’d like to tell you about my experience of Easter.When I was a student, I spent a month at an English language school in Dublin, Ireland, during the spring holiday. It was my first time that I tried Easter chocolate.

その時、やっと気が付いたことがありました。実は私が通っていた保育園はキリスト教の保育園で、毎年春にもらった赤い卵と白い卵はイースター・エッグだったということです。「赤と白」は日本でお祝いの色なので、イースターに日本の文化をとり入れていたのは日本らしくて面白いですね。

It was only then that I realised something. It turned out that the nursery I attended was a Christian nursery, and the red and white eggs we were given every spring were actually Easter eggs. As red and white are colours associated with celebrations in Japan, it’s quite interesting—and very Japanese—that they incorporated elements of Japanese culture into their Easter celebrations.

I took this photo at a chocolate shop in Brussels, Belgium. There are so many chocolate shops in Brussels, and every single one had such amazing Easter decorations that it felt like I was in a dream town.

アムステルダムではイースター・コンサートがあって、私が大好きなバッハの音楽を楽しみました。特にスペインやイタリアではイースターはとても大切なイベントだと思います。

There was an Easter concert in Amsterdam, where I enjoyed listening to Bach’s music, my favourite composer. I think Easter is a particularly important event, especially in Spain and Italy.

では日本とイースターの似ている点について１つは、イギリスではイースターに教会に行く人は少なくなっていて、宗教から文化に変わっていくというのが日本と似ていると思います。

Now, one similarity between Japan and Easter is that, in the UK, less people attend church at Easter these days, and the celebration seems to be shifting from a religious to a cultural event—which is like what has happened in Japan.

イギリスでは毎年イースター休みはみなさんが一緒に過ごすとてもいい機会です。ロンドンの大学に留学中、スチューデント・ハウスでシェアメイトだった友達も今週末みんなで会いました。

In the UK, the Easter holidays are always a great opportunity for everyone to get together. My friends from the student house in London actually had a gathering this Easter weekend—we were flatmates when I was studying there.

日本のイベントも、神道や仏教のイベントが誰でも祝う文化的なイベントに変わっているものがたくさんあります。たとえば、夏祭りや花火大会は昔は仏教のイベントでしたし、新年のお祝いも昔は神道のイベントでした。

Many Japanese events that originated as Shinto or Buddhist observances have evolved into cultural celebrations enjoyed by everyone. For example, summer festivals and fireworks displays were once Buddhist events, and New Year celebrations were once Shinto events.

日本人があまり宗教を意識しないという点では、私が去年イスタンブールに３か月いたとき、イスラム教のラマダン（日が出ている間は何も食べない）中に、私もラマダンを体験してみました。毎日食べられることに感謝できたので、やってみて、本当に良かったです。

As for the fact that Japanese people don’t tend to be very religious, when I spent three months in Istanbul last year, I decided to try Ramadan myself—the Islamic fast during which one does not eat whilst the sun is up. I’m so glad I gave it a go, as it made me appreciate the fact that I can eat every day.

２つ目の似ている点は「４月が新しいスタート」だと感じていることです。イギリスではイースターに卵を食べることで新しく人生をスタートする気分になっています。

The second similarity is the feeling that ‘April marks a fresh start’. In the UK, eating eggs at Easter gives people the sense that they are starting a new chapter in their lives.

日本の４月には会社も学校も新しく始まって、新しい町に引っ越す人も多いですし、新しい同僚やクラスメイトに出会うときです。何かを始めるスタートのタイミングですね。

In Japan, April marks the start of a new financial year for companies and a new school year for schools; it’s a time when many people move to new towns or meet new colleagues and classmates. It’s the month to start something new.

３つ目は４月はイギリスでも日本でも日が長くなり、あたたかくなってきます。花が咲き始めて、木も緑になり始めます。そうすると、寒くて暗い冬から明るくてあたたかい春を感じて、とても気分がよくなる季節です。朝、起きるのも楽になりますね。

Thirdly, in April, the days get longer and warmer in both the UK and Japan. Flowers start to bloom and the trees begin to turn green. This makes it a season when you really start to feel the transition from the cold, dark winter to the bright, warm spring, which lifts your spirits.

気分がいい時に新しいことをスタートするというのは続けやすくなって、１月１日のスタートよりゴールまで行きやすくなると思いませんか。私も４月から新しいことを始めるのが好きで、今年は新しいパソコンを買ったので、仕事へのモチベーションが上がっています！みなさんは何か新しいことを考えていますか。

Don’t you think it’s easier to stick with something if you start it when you’re feeling positive, and that you’re more likely to see it through to the end than if you start on 1 January? I also like starting new things in April, and as I’ve bought a new computer this year, my motivation for work has really gone up! Would you like to start something new?
