Ochugen — A Gentle Japanese Summer Tradition of Gratitude
Jul 01, 2026
July 1st marks the beginning of a quiet, heartfelt summer tradition in Japan.
As the year reaches its halfway point, Japan enters a season called Ochugen — a time simply to say “thank you for the past six months.”
It is not a grand gesture. It is not about obligation or formality. It is a moment to pause, breathe, and acknowledge the people whose presence, kindness, or support carried us to this point.
Ochugen is one of Japan’s seasonal customs that gently reminds us that relationships are not built through big actions, but through small, sincere moments of appreciation.
What Ochugen Means in Japanese Culture
Traditionally, Ochugen was a summer offering to express gratitude to one’s elders or mentors. Over time, it has become a soft, modern way to say:
“I’m grateful for you.” “Thank you for being there.” “Your presence mattered.”
It is a gift that carries no pressure, no expectation of return, and no demand for perfection.
Just a quiet acknowledgment of the human connections that helped us through the first half of the year.
A Gentle Summer Message From My Culture
To begin this quiet season of Ochugen, I would like to share one simple Japanese phrase with you:
「自分にやさしく」 Be kind to yourself.
If these words reach your heart, I hope they bring a little softness into your day. You have carried so much these past six months. You deserve a moment of gentleness — from others, and from yourself.

To accompany today’s Ochugen message, I prepared two versions of the illustration — so you can keep this gentle phrase close in your day.

Feel free to download whichever fits your daily life. Or both, if you’d like.
If Someone Comes to Mind…
Ochugen is also a beautiful moment to let your gratitude travel to someone who supported you, encouraged you, or quietly did their best these past six months. You’re welcome to share this blog with them as a small summer gift from you.
A Soft, Thoughtful Gift for Someone Who Loves Japan
If you’d like to share a gentle summer gift with someone who loves Japan — or with yourself — you can offer a short, welcoming Japanese course.
It’s a small moment of joy that stays with you, grows with you, and brings a little softness into your day.
🎁 Gift As A Course https://www.araiacademy.com/gift-a-course
Ochugen is traditionally given between July 1st and July 15th, so gifting during this period carries the true spirit of the season. But the course itself can be gifted at any time of the year.
🌸 Thank You for Walking With Me Through the First Half of the Year
Seasonal traditions in Japan are not just customs — they are gentle reminders to pause, reflect, and appreciate the connections that shape our lives.
Thank you, from my heart, for reading my words, for sharing this cultural moment with me, and for being part of this journey.
May your summer be filled with warmth, softness, and quiet moments of connection.
