Successful Business with Japanese

Business Japanese learner- Samuel Dalimore

Samuel is my student who runs a business called Lux Industries in Oxford. When he met his Japanese clients for the first time in February this year, he spoke Japanese, which helped him build a strong relationship of trust with his clients and achieve great success in his business.

It was great that Samuel understood that it would be better to speak some Japanese in order to build a strong relationship with the Japanese. So, just before going to Japan, he took three 45-minute lessons to learn the minimum but effective expressions necessary especially for this business trip.

He studied Japanese a little about three years ago, but he stopped because he lost the opportunity to go to Japan, so he started our lessons again from scratch after a long break.

He was going to visit the clients’ factory in Japan, so he studied only the expressions that would be useful for that occasion. I selected beginner-level expressions and simple grammar but sophisticated ones to give a nice impression in a business setting.

Samuel asked me about good gifts from the UK for this kind of client. He also wanted to give a personalised gift and designed it with the logos of the two companies. So, we prepared more than just the Japanese language in the lessons.

Samuel told me his story after returning from a week-long business trip to Japan and it was absolutely impressive! When he greeted the Japanese clients in Japanese on the first day, they looked at each other and seemed surprised at how beautiful his Japanese was. He spoke Japanese when giving them the gifts and during a factory tour too.

As he developed a wonderful relationship with his clients over the week, he was a bit upset and in tears when he was leaving Japan.

When I heard this story, I was very happy that Samuel managed to speak the Japanese expressions after only three lessons and achieved such wonderful results.

Since then, Samuel has been taking a Japanese lesson every week since March. Making time for studying Japanese is not easy when you are running a business, but he is enjoying our lessons every week. He has another business trip to Japan in September, and he wants to try giving a presentation in Japanese this time, so we are currently preparing for that.

As he understands the importance of building relationships with Japanese clients, I am truly happy to teach such a student who is so dedicated to it.

サミュエルさんはオックスフォードでLUX Industriesという会社を経営している生徒です。今年の2月に初めて日本人のクライアントに会いに行った時、日本語で話したことで、クライアントと強い信頼関係を作り、ビジネスで大成功しました。

サミュエルさんは日本人との関係を良くするために、少しでも日本語で話した方がいいとわかっていたのがとても良かったです。それで、日本に行く直前に45分レッスン3回で、この出張に合った最低限の効果的な表現を学びました。

3年前ぐらい前に日本語少し勉強しましたが、日本に行く機会がなくなって、やめたので、久しぶりのレッスンはまたゼロからスタートしました。

日本にいるクライアントの工場を見ることになったので、そのときに使える表現だけを勉強しました。ビギナーレベルの表現で、やさしい文法を使いながら、ビジネスシーンで洗練された印象を与えられるようにレッスンをしました。

サミュエルさんはイギリスからのプレゼントについてもどんなものがいいかと質問してきたり、2つの会社のロゴが入ったデザインのプレゼントを作ったりと、日本語以外でもレッスンでカバーしました。

日本に1週間出張して帰ってきてからのサミュエルさんの話はとても感動的でした！なんと、初めて日本人のクライアント2人に日本語で挨拶をした時、クライアント同士が顔を見合わせて、日本語のきれいさにびっくりした様子だったそうです。その後も日本語でプレゼントをあげて、工場見学でも日本語を話したそうです。

この1週間の間にクライアントと素晴らしい関係ができたそうで、日本を出るときは涙が出てしまうほどだったそうです。

私はこの話を聞いて、サミュエルさんが3回のレッスンで習ったことをしっかりと話せるようにして、すばらしい結果を出せたことが私にとってもとてつもない喜びでした。

その後、サミュエルさんは3月から毎週日本語のレッスンを受けています。ビジネスをしていると、日本語の勉強を作るのは大変ですが、毎週楽しみながら頑張っています。9月にまた日本に行くことになっているので、今度は日本語でのプレゼンにチャレンジしたいと言っているので、今はその準備をしています。

日本人との関係が大切だとわかっていて、そのためにこんなに一生懸命になっている生徒と一緒にレッスンができることは本当に幸せです。
