Zen Teaching from Kyoto Myoshin-ji - January 2026

禅仏教に興味がありますか。大きく分けて3つのグループがあります。臨済宗、曹洞宗、黄檗宗です。

Are you interested in Zen Buddhism? Broadly speaking, there are three main groups: the Rinzai school, the Soto school, and the Obaku school.

実は親友の東海真紀子さんは京都にある臨済宗の妙心寺派の大本山妙心寺にいます。それで、私は毎年京都に行って、真紀子さんに会いますが、いつもとても刺激を受けます。

Actually, my best friend is at Myōshin-ji, the head temple of the Myōshin-ji branch of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism in Kyoto. So, I go to Kyoto every year to see her, and I always find it very inspiring.

1年前に会った時、真紀子さんは世界中の人たちに日本の禅について発信したいと言っていました。もう25年間妙心寺に住んでいるので、いろいろ知っているんですね。

When I met her a year ago, she mentioned that she wanted to share Japanese Zen with people around the world. Having lived at Myōshin-ji for 25 years now, she has extensive knowledge about it.

ただ、お寺での生活は一般の人たちと違いますし、とても忙しいので、私が一緒に投稿を手伝ったらできそうだと思いました。それで、2026年から私たちの発信がスタートすることになりました。

However, life at a temple is different from our ordinary life, and she is always busy. I wanted to help with the posts. So, we'll start sharing their teaching in 2026.

日本のお寺には毎月の「教え」を寺の前に見せています。この写真の「教え」は

「悟りとは

迷いの木に咲く

花である」

Japanese temples display a monthly teaching in front of the temple. The teaching in this photo reads:

"Enlightenment is

a flower blooming

on the tree of uncertainties."

人生ではいろいろ迷うことがありますね。でも、時間が経つと咲く花のように、そのうちどうすればいいかわかるようになるという意味だと思います。

Life is full of uncertainties, isn't it? But I think it means that, like flowers that bloom in time, eventually you'll come to understand what to do.

「悟り」と「迷い」は正反対のように感じる人も多いと思いますが、これは一つのことなんですね。それに気づけると、今ネガティブに感じていることもポジティブに感じられるようになると思います。

Many people feel that “enlightenment” and “uncertainties” are polar opposites, but they are actually both sides of the same coin. Once you realize this, even things that feel negative now can start to feel positive.

私がバックパッカーだった時、インドのアシュラムに3週間泊まりましたが、ここでの「ワンネス」という教えが似ている気がします。

When I was backpacking, I stayed at an ashram in India for three weeks, and I feel the teaching of “oneness” here is quite similar.
