Most Japanese people live their lives under the influence of Zen. It seems this tradition has been passed down from their ancestors to the present day.

My best friend is based at Myลshin-ji, the head temple of the Myลshin-ji branch of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism, located in Kyoto. Every month, she shares the teachings displayed in front of this temple with people like you around the world who love Japan.

This is a teaching from this month.

‘Even if the path is short,

you will not reach your destination unless you set out;

even if the task is small,

it will not be accomplished

unless you take action.’

The lesson here is that nothing is ever completed unless you take action and persevere. Even with simple tasks, if you don’t do them, you won’t see any results; that’s why it’s so important to keep going small things until you reach your goal.

Even if a shop has opened nearby, you won’t get there unless you actually go. Even if it’s something that takes just five minutes a day, you won’t achieve it unless you do it. So, if you learn something new or make plans, turning them into action is what lets you reach your goals.

For example, if you study Japanese or draw up a study plan, you will reach that goal by sticking to it until you reach there,. In other words, if you break down a long-term goal into smaller daily goals, you will be able to achieve a goal a day.

This means that, it’s important to put what you’ve learnt into practice in order to master it. For example, once you’ve learnt a new Japanese expression, it's better to practise its usage by actually speaking or writing it out until it sticks for using it in a conversation or in an email.

Of course, if you try to do too much in a single day, it can become stressful to continue. So just making a small step towards your goal for the day is a wonderful achievement.

Every morning, I write down a small goal for the day. It makes me very happy when I manage to achieve that small goal by the end of the day. Even if the changes aren’t obvious over the course of a single day, it’s exciting to think about how far I might have come a year from now.
