Japanese Christmas

Merry Christmas! There are Christmas events in Japan as well. But, it’s not national holiday and people keep working, go to school and shops and restaurant remain opened.

In Japan, Christmas is mainly for couples, and they spend a romantic time in a gorgeous restaurant or bar. This may be because Christmas lights make Japanese people feel romantic (without understanding the origin?). That’s why the singles do not feel comfortable. It’s very different from Christmas in the UK as people celebrate with family.

However, my family have a Christmas party every year. And I make Japanese Christmas cake (which is similar to Victoria Sponge Cake) for them. I made it this year too. Please look at the photo. I made this cake. Every time, they say ‘It’s so delicious!’ and it makes me happy.

By the way, my mother told me that non-Christian Japanese people started enjoying Christmas event around 1950 and they had Christmas cake after usual Japanese dinner on 24th of December. And Christmas party became popular from around 1970 when Japanese economy started bubbling.

When I was a child, I had Christmas parties with my family and friends and received presents. Also, there were parties at my nursery and the local community. Santa Clause came to the parties and gave me Japanese Christmas cake and presents.

Regarding the food, often people drink ‘chammerry’ which is non-alcohol but makes us feel like drinking champagne, and eat fried chicken. ‘chammerry’ has a various designs with popular characters such as Pokémon for children.

It might be unbelievable for Christians, but this is how most Japanese people spend Christmas in Japan.
