Happy Diwali ! My Cross-cultural experience in the UK

Happy Diwali!

During my first year in the UK, I went to a Diwali event in London! There are many people originally from India here in Britain. Since it was something I couldn't experience in Japan, I remember it being a really great cross-cultural experience and a lot of fun!

My British friend lives in Wembley, north of London, which is one of the areas with a large Indian population.

There was a Hindu temple there, and this Diwali event was huge. There are also many other Indian areas.

At some point, I realised that British people love Indian food the most, therefore, there are more Indian restaurants than fish and chips shops.

It's amazing to be able to learn about Indian culture while living in the UK. But actually, before coming to the UK in 2003, I travelled from Asia to Europe as a backpacker and visited India.

I’ll write about the experiences another time, so please look forward to it. This time, I'll share a photo of me at the Ganges River in Varanasi, India.

I'm truly grateful that you all have an interest in Japanese culture and learning Japanese.

Because I appreciate you are learning Japanese and the culture, I'll do my best to learn more about many different cultures and ways of thinking around the world so I can make our lessons even more enjoyable!

In this article, let me share one experience from India at least! What deeply resonated with me was definitely the Indian philosophical concept of ‘Oneness’. It means to see the whole picture in our life. It means that we are all connected.

It still resonates with my heart today and that's why, I believe it's vital to foster an environment where we can support each other as much as possible, as one of the Japanese language teachers.

It's been about a year since I formed the Japanese Language Teachers group on LinkedIn. In this group, Japanese language teachers from different countries participate in online study sessions to support and learn from each other in order to deliver effective lessons for their students.

ハッピーディワリ！

イギリスに来た最初の年にロンドンでDiwaliのイベントに行きました！ここイギリスにはインド系の人たちがたくさんいます。それで日本では体験できなかったことだったので、とてもいい異文化体験で楽しかったのを覚えています。

私のイギリス人の友だちがロンドンの北にあるウェンブリーという町に住んでいて、ここはインド人が多いエリアの一つなんです。

そこにヒンズー教の寺院があって、このDiwaliのイベントはとても大きかったです。

他にもたくさんインド人のエリアがあります。

イギリス人はインド料理が一番好きだそうで、フィッシュアンドチップスのレストランよりインド料理のレストランのほうが多いと思います。

イギリスにいながら、インドの文化も学べるという環境は面白いですね。でも実はイギリスに来る前、２００３年にアジアからヨーロッパを旅して、インドにも行きました。

いつかその時の話も書きたいと思っていますので、楽しみにしていてください。今回はバラナシのガンジス川で撮った写真を共有します。

皆さんが日本の文化に興味を持ってくれていることにとても感謝しています。

日本語を学んでいるみなさん、私ももっと世界のいろいろな文化や考え方を学んで、楽しいレッスンができるようにがんばりますね！

1つだけ今回の記事でインドでの体験を話すなら、やっぱり、インド哲学のワンネスという考え方がとても心に響きましたね。

全体を見るということ。私たちは繋がっているということ。だからこそ、日本語教師という仕事をしながら、できるだけサポートし合える環境が大切だと考えています。

私が日本語教師会を作ってから1年ぐらいたちますが、勉強会でいろいろな国で活躍されている日本語の先生方が参加して生徒たちのためにいい授業ができるようにサポートし合う会です。
