Business Japanese Lesson at the British Museum

My student who is a Japanese art dealer and I had a Japanese lesson at the British Museum last week and she successfully explained about the art works in Japanese at the special exhibition of Japanese art, Ukiyo-e by Hiroshige.

Over the past 20 years, Japan-related work has become very popular

Anastasia von Seibold is a student of mine and a Japanese art dealer. She graduated from SOAS, University of London, the most prestigious university for Japanese Studies in Europe, in 2005 with a degree in Japanese Art and I also graduated from SOAS in 2006 with a degree in Applied Japanese Linguistics.

Anastasia was interested in Japanese art because the Japanese perception like “Bijin-ga (beautiful woman)” is different perception from the Western’s. In my case, I had a dream for global communication and coexistence among people from all over the world.

However, 20 years ago, fewer people were interested in Japan, and not many people were interested in Japanese art or studying Japanese. So, it was very difficult to find a job related to Japanese things.

Even so, we wanted to follow our passions and work in the fields. Anastasia successfully got a job at Christie's, a famous auction house in the UK, and I also managed to become a lecturer of Japanese language at SOAS and other UK universities.

20 years later today, the British Museum has the exhibition of Hiroshige, as well as Hokusai 2 years ago, and there are many Japanese language apps available too. It was good that we continued with passion during the difficult time.

Japanese lessons tailored to Anastasia's expertise

Our lessons started with saying the price of Ukiyo-e in Japanese yen at auction houses in Tokyo, followed by conversations with Japanese dealers and clients who restore Japanese prints, and recently she practiced describing Ukiyo-e in Japanese.

Between May and September this year, there is an exhibition of “Hiroshige” at the British Museum, and we decided to have our lesson there and Anastasia explained about these prints in Japanese.

Anastasia explained in details, professionally using the expressions she had learnt in our Japanese lessons. Being an expert, she told me why the first print is the highest quality, how different Japanese art works are from the ones in the West, and about Hiroshige's life. I have learnt so many things with surprise at the lesson in the British Museum!

It was a good challenge for her to explain about Japanese prints in Japanese while looking at them at the exhibition in a practical lesson.

Anastasia is always very busy, visiting collectors and auction houses all over the world, and last year she had her own exhibition at Sotheby's, the oldest auction house in London. However, she never misses our weekly Japanese lessons.

So, I am very happy to see that she can now use her Japanese more professionally for work compared to the time we started our Japanese lessons.

‘It was fun to visit the Hiroshige exhibition at the British Museum together with Arai-sensei. It was great to talk together about Japanese prints in Japanese – I had the opportunity to explain about all sorts of ukiyo-e related topics – I could put to use lots of good vocabulary!

The history of collecting Japanese art in the West goes back to the 2^nd half of the19^th century and continued into the 20^th century with numerous major auctions of Japanese art across Europe. This popularity continues today, although the way people collect has changed dramatically due to the internet and online sales.

International online auctions dedicated to Japanese woodblock prints continue to attract new collectors and achieve strong results. Individual prints such as Hokusai’s Great Wave continue to attract much admiration in the art market – it has become an internationally recognised and iconic image. 【この20年で日本関連の仕事が大人気に】

アナスタシアさんは私の生徒で、日本美術のディーラーです。ロンドン大学SOASというヨーロッパで日本研究が一番有名な大学でアナスタシアさんは2005年に日本美術を、私は2006年に応用日本言語学を学び、卒業しました。

アナスタシアさんは西洋とは違う日本人の「美人画」という視点に関心を持ち、日本美術を、私はグローバル・コミュニ―ケーションができて世界中の人々が共存できたらという夢を抱いていました。

ただ、20年前は今と比べて日本に興味を持っている人が少なく、日本美術に関心がある人や日本語を学ぶ人も限られていたので、日本関連の仕事に就くのはとても難しい時代でした。

そんな時代でも私たちは自分の心に従って仕事にしたいと思い、アナスタシアさんはイギリスで有名なオークションハウス、クリスティーズに無事就職でき、私もなんとかSOASなどイギリスの大学で日本語の仕事に就くことができたという状況でした。

それが、20年経った今では大英博物館で「広重」や以前には「北斎」の展示会が行われれ、日本語のアプリもたくさんあり、このような時代が来るとは思っていませんでした。大変な時代を乗り越えられて良かったと実感します。

【専門に合わせ日本語のレッスン】

アナスタシアさんのレッスンは東京のオークションハウスで浮世絵の値段を円で言うことから始まり、その後は日本人のディーラーさんや版画を修復してくれるクライアントさんなどとの会話、最近は浮世絵の説明などを練習していました。

ちょうど今年の5月から9月まで大英博物館で「広重」の展示があるので、ここで実際に作品について日本語で説明するというレッスンをすることにしました。

アナスタシアさんは今まで習った表現を上手に使いながら詳しく説明してくれました。専門家だけあって、どうして初版が一番質が高いのか、西洋とは違う日本の作品の表現の仕方、また広重の生活についてもいろいろと教えてくれました。「そういわれれば、そうですね！」という発見の連続でした。

やっぱり実際に展示されたたくさんの版画を見ながら日本語で説明するというのは実践的なレッスンでいい力試しになったようです。

アナスタシアさんの仕事は世界中のコレクターに会ったり、オークション・ハウスに行ったり、去年はロンドンで一番歴史があるサザビーズというオークションハウスでご自身の展示会をしたりと、とても忙しいんですが、毎週の日本語のレッスンは欠かしません。

それで、日本語のレッスンを始めたころに比べて、日本語をもっと専門的に仕事で使えるようになったのが実感でき、とても嬉しいです。
