Gift Culture in Japan - End of Year

日本では12月にプレゼントをするのを知っていますか？この1年の感謝を表すためで、クリスマスのプレゼントじゃないんです。これを「お歳暮」と言います。江戸時代より前からある日本のプレゼントの文化ですから、これを知っておくと、いい関係を作るのに役に立ちますね。

Did you know that in Japan we give gifts in December? It's to express gratitude for the past year, not a Christmas present. This is called “oseibo”. This gift-giving culture started before the Edo Period in Japan and understanding it could be helpful for you to build good relationships.

今回は「お歳暮」の①タイミング、②人気のプレゼント、③いただいた場合のお礼の仕方についてご紹介します。

I would like to show you 1) the timing, 2) popular presents and 3) how to respond when you receive ‘osebo’.

１．今年もお世話になった人にプレゼントをあげます。主に家族や親戚、友人や会社の人など、「来年もまたよろしく」という気持ちを込めて毎年あげます。今までもこれからも長い関係を大切にしたいという気持ちを伝えるためですね。関東ではたいてい１２月の間、関西では１２月1３日から31日までだそうです（ウィキ参照）。今年だけお世話になった人に感謝を表したい場合は「お歳暮」ではなく「お礼」としてあげるといいです。

1. You give a present to the people who took care of you this year as always, such as your family, relatives, friends and people from your work. You show your gratitude to them in the past, this year and future relationship by giving a gift every year. The timing is 1^st-31^st December in Kanto area, and 13^th -31^st December in Kansai area (wiki). You can still give a present as ‘orei(thanks gift)’ not as ‘osebo’to show your gratitude to someone just for this year.

２．生ものなら、かにやいちごなど季節の食べ物が喜ばれます。正月に楽しめるお酒や鍋用の肉なども人気です。いつでも楽しめるコーヒーのセットや石鹸などもおすすめです。たいてい箱に入っているので、箱の上に「お歳暮」と書いた「のし」という紙を貼ります。これはプレゼントのリボンのようなものだと思います。

2. Crab meat and strawberries can be nice seasonal gifts, but food for ‘shogatsu (New Year)’ such as alcohol and meat for ‘nabe (hot-pot)’ are also popular. You can give long lasting gifts such as coffee sets and soaps, throughout the year as well. These are usually beautifully packed in a box and you cover the top with ‘noshi’ paper written ‘osebo’ on it. This is something like ribbons.

 3.「お歳暮」をもらったら、お返しをしなくてもいいですが、すぐにお礼の気持ちを伝えるのはとても大切です。親しい人なら、電話やメールでもいいですが、ハガキを書いたほうが丁寧にお礼できます。お返しをするなら、12月中は「お歳暮」として、1月になってからは7日までは「お年賀」としてプレゼントします。

3. When you receive ‘osebo’, you do not have to give a present in return. But it is courtesy to send a thanks message immediately. When you receive it by delivery, a telephone call and e-mail is fine to close people but a postcard is more polite. If you want to give a present back within December it will be  ‘osebo’ but it will be ‘onenga (New Year gift)’ between 1^st -7^th of January.

さいきんは会社や学校などでコンプライアンス上このようなプレセントをあげたりもらったりすることが禁止されていることが多いそうです。その会社でのルールを知っておくことといいですね。昔からある「お歳暮」も社会の変化で変わってきているようです。

I have heard that many companies and schools recently ban giving and receiving such presents due to their compliances. Therefore, I would recommend you to check it in advance. The　traditional culture of ‘osebo’ has changed in this modern society.

私の父は長野出身なので、毎年長野で有名なりんごや今年は干し柿ももらいました。母は静岡の有名なものとして、毎年「うなぎパイ」をあげますが、今年は静岡のお茶で作ったバームクーヘンを送るそうです。

My father is from Nagano, so every year my family receive apples, famous from Nagano, and we received dried persimmons in addition to apples this year. My mother gives them “Unagi Pie” as a popular sweet from Shizuoka, but this year, she is going to send a Baumkuchen made with famous Shizuoka tea.
