Japanese Cross-cultural Communication through Harwell Japan Day
Oct 30, 2026Last week, my student Samuel kindly invited me to attend Harwell Japan Day, an event that brings together people from Japan and the UK to explore opportunities for collaboration in innovation, research, and business.
Throughout the day, I found myself feeling grateful.
Grateful for the invitation.
Grateful for the people I met.
And grateful for the unexpected journey that had brought me to this point.
One of the most memorable moments came during Samuel's presentation.
When we first prepared for his visit to Japan, Japan was simply a destination for an upcoming business trip.
Looking at him now, speaking passionately about collaboration, trust, and relationships with Japanese partners, I could not help but smile.
I felt grateful to have witnessed that journey from the very beginning.
At the end of his presentation, Samuel invited me to say a few words.
Standing in front of the audience, I congratulated him on his success and thanked him for allowing me to be part of his journey.
I also told him that I look forward to seeing where our journey will lead next.
Several years ago, Samuel challenged me to think differently.
He was incredibly busy and had very little time to prepare for Japan.
It made me ask an important question:
How can someone build meaningful relationships with Japanese people when time is limited?
What began as a way to support one student gradually became something much bigger.
Over the years, I have worked with other professionals facing similar challenges, helping them build stronger relationships with Japanese partners.
Looking back, I realise that everything began with a relationship between two people.
Over time, that relationship led to new opportunities, new ideas, and new connections.
Today, Samuel is helping to build bridges between Japan and the wider world through his work in hydrogen energy.
After the event, he showed me around LUX and introduced me to some of his colleagues, including Will, one of my students whom I had previously only met online.
He even introduced me to the cat I had often seen during our lessons.
Despite being incredibly busy, he still showed how much he values the people and relationships that matter to him.
That touched me deeply.
It reminded me that meaningful relationships are built through trust, mutual respect, and genuine care for one another.
Experiences like this also remind me why I created Japanese Cross-cultural Communication Essentials.
My hope is not simply to teach Japanese words or behaviours.
My hope is to help people build meaningful connections with Japanese people.
As a Japanese person living in the UK, it was inspiring to see so many people working to strengthen the relationship between Japan and the UK.
The more I reflect on Harwell Japan Day, the more I realise that meaningful international relationships often begin in a very simple way:
One conversation.
One act of kindness.
One person trying to understand another.
Before I finish, I would love to ask you something:
Who are the people that have shaped your journey?
What connections are you most grateful for today? 🌸
