How to raise a daughter – the Japanese way　ひな祭り

今日、3月3日は「ひな祭り」です。女の子の日で、女の子が元気に育って、幸せになることを願うイベントです。昔は子供が無事に大人に成長するのが今より難しかったようですから。It is March 3^rd today and it is ‘Hinamatsuri’ in Japan. It is the day for girls and parents wish healthy growth and happiness for their daughters, because it was not easy for children to grow up to the age of adult long time ago.

家にひな人形と桃の花を飾ります。日本では人形は厄（悪いもの）を取ってくれるという考え方があるからです。この時期にするのは桃の花が咲くタイミングで桃も悪いものを取ってくれると考えられているからです。ただ、「節分」の記事で触れましたが、明治時代に旧暦（太陰暦）から新暦（太陽暦）に変わったので、実際には4月になると桃が咲きます。They decorate ‘hina-ningyo (hina dolls)’ and peach blossoms in the house. In Japan people believe that the dolls and peach blossoms remove bad things/illness from people. However, it actually blooms in early April because the calendar was changed to solar calendar from lunar calendar in Meiji Period as I mentioned in the article about ‘Setsubun’,.

面白いのはひな人形はかならず男びなと女びながいるんです。これは宮中の婚礼の様子を人形と嫁入り道具で表しています。これは私の勝手な解釈ですが、親が女の子の素敵な結婚を願っているようにも見えます。It is interesting that the dolls are always ‘otoko-bina (male-hina)’ and ‘onna-bina (female hina)’. The setting is royal wedding with wedding items placed around. This is my personal understanding but it seems parents also wish their daughter(s) for a happy marriage in the future.

ひな人形を飾るタイミングは決まっていませんが、たいてい節分の後の2月4日から2月中旬が人気です。でも、しまうのはできるだけ早い方がいいと言われています。遅くしまうと結婚も遅くなると考えられているからです。There is no set time to decorate the dolls but it is normally after ‘Setsubun’ - March 4^th to mid-February. However, it is better to remove the dolls soon after ‘Hinamatsuri’. Because it is believed that the delay of removing delays their marriage. Isn’t it interesting?

昔は紙などでひな人形を作って、悪いものを取ってもらったら、ひな祭りの後、川に流していたそうです。でも、江戸時代に人形作りがさかんになってからは豪華な5段のひな人形ができたそうです。今は都会に住む人も多く、スペース的に3段や1段のひな人形が人気のようです。Originally, the dolls were made with paper and these were thrown into the river after they removed bad things. However, the craftsmen started making gorgeous dolls on 5 layers in Edo Period. Nowadays, the dolls with 3 layers or just 1 layer are more popular for the limited space especially in big cities.

そして、ひな祭りに「甘酒」を飲んで「ひなあられ」や「菱餅（ひしもち）」を食べます。「菱餅」の緑は草、白は雪、ピンクは花とイメージし、春の季節を連想させます。これを食べると健康で長生きできると信じられています。On the day, people drink sweet sake and eat ‘hina-arare (hina puff)’ and ‘hishi-mochi (diamond shaped mochi). ‘Hishi-mochi’ has three layers, green at the bottom, white in the middle and pink on top.  You can feel spring because green represents grasses, white represents snow and pink represents flowers.

もちろん、ひな祭りは女の子がいる親がすることで、男の子しかいない家ではしません。皆さんの国には女の子のためのイベントがありますか。女の子だけのためのイベントということに違和感を感じますか。今回も日本人の考え方について何か学びになったら嬉しいです。Of course the parents who have daughter(s) organise ‘Hinamatsuri’ and the parents who have only sons do not. In your country, do you have a special event for daughters? Do you feel a bit strange because this is only for girls? I hope you learnt something about Japanese mind-set.
