今年も半年が過ぎました。日本では夏に「お中元」をあげます。日頃の感謝を表すためですね。今回は「お中元」の①タイミング、②人気のプレゼント、③いただいた場合のお礼の仕方についてご紹介します。最後にプレゼントもご紹介します。お役に立てたらたらうれしいです。

Already 6 months have passed this year. In Japan, people give presents in summer in order to say thanks for the daily support around you. I would like to show you 1) the timing, 2) popular presents and 3) how to respond if you receive ‘ochugen’. I'll share a gift idea at the end of the article! I hope it will be helpful.

 ①この半年お世話になった人、主に先生や上司など目上の人に感謝の気持ちを表します。たいてい7月から8月15日の間にお中元をあげますが、関東や東北では7月15日までです。遅れてしまったら、「お中元」ではなく「残暑見舞い」としてお礼をすることができます。

You show your gratitude to the people who took care of you for the last 6 months. They are normally in a higher position or senior, such as your teacher or your boss. It is from early July to August 15^th in most part of Japan but to July 15^th in Kanto and Tohoku regions by following the old Japanese calendar (Lunar calendar). 

 ②夏なので冷たいものが人気で、ビールやそうめん、メロン、フルーツゼリー、水ようかんなどが喜ばれるようです。またタオルや石鹸なんども人気のようです。たいてい箱に入っているので、箱の表面に「お中元」と書いた「のし」という紙を貼ります。これはプレゼントのリボンのようなものだと思います。

As a summer gift, something cold is popular, for example, beer, ‘somen (cold noodle)’, melon, fruit jelly and ‘mizu-yokan (red bean cake). Beautiful towels and soaps are also nice. These are usually beautifully packed in a box and you cover the top with ‘noshi’ paper written ‘ochugen’ on it. This is something like ribbons.

 ③もし「お中元」をもらったら、すぐにお礼の気持ちを伝えるのが礼儀です。送られてきた場合はメールでもいいですがハガキを書くともっと丁寧にお礼できます。「お中元」は基本的に目下の人がお世話になった目上の人に感謝を表す行為なので、特にお返しをする必要はありません。

It is courtesy to send a thanks message immediately when you receive ‘ochugen’. If you receive it by delivery, e-mail is fine but a post card is more polite. You do not have to give a present as return because ‘ochugen’ is basically from a team member to the boss or from a student to the teacher.

私も日本で学生の時にお世話になった先生にお酒などをあげました。イギリスの大学や外務省で働いていた時にも日本人の上司に「お中元」をあげればよかったと今では思います。気持ちとしてはこの半年間お世話になったことだけではなく、残りの半年も「またよろしくお願いします。」という想いも込められている気がします。

I gave ‘ochugen’ to my teachers when I was a student in Japan. And now I feel that I should have done the same to my Japanese bosses at the universities and the Foreign Office in the UK. I think that ‘ochugen’ is showing thanks not only to the last half year but also for the latter half of the year to create or keep a good relationship with them.
