Celebrating the 10th anniversary of Arai Academy, had me reflecting on the past decade. 

My greatest source of energy throughout this time has been my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who loves Japan, along with my passion for supporting you all.

 Each of you has different goals—whether it's travel, business, work, or hobbies—and I have always aimed to provide three things:

 ① an environment for continuous learning,

 ② confidence in communicating with Japanese people, and

 ③ reassurance of learning support. 

Ultimately, what I truly want to see is your smiles and successes, thinking, “I’m so glad I studied Japanese!”

However, I was absolutely terrified at first. 

I studied 'Applied Japanese Linguistics' and began teaching full-time at UK universities in 2006.  It was only ten years ago that I finally began to understand how to teach Japanese effectively. Although I earned an MBA in Education Management in 2012, success was not guaranteed, and I needed tremendous courage to start my own academy. 

There were hardly any businesspeople around me, and I had to begin completely alone.

But because you love Japan and want to learn Japanese, I was motivated to support your learning journey—this was my only source of energy. I am 100% certain that I was able to overcome my fears by following my passion to make your dream of “being able to communicate confidently in Japanese” as it is my dream too!

Me as a Supporter Rather Than a Teacher

① An environment for continuous learning

It's not just university students; many people like you want to learn Japanese even while working, isn't it? I'm truly grateful that you've started studying Japanese despite your busy life.

Of course, keeping learning is tough, but I really wanted to support you by providing a good learning environment where each of you who decided to learn Japanese could continue without giving up, even your busy lives.

②  Confidence in communicating with Japanese people

Wouldn't it be wonderful to achieve heart-to-heart communication with Japanese people? I always say ‘Mind=Expressions’, and I wanted to support people in understanding Japanese ways of thinking and feeling, enabling you to express yourself naturally and behave in a nice manner. It would be amazing if more people gained confidence in interacting in Japanese.

③ Reassurance of Learning Support

As a native Japanese speaker, mastering English was extremely challenging. I had a great pain when my score of English exam was low after studying hard every day while my Spanish-speaking friend achieved a high mark, while she was socialising with her friends.

Then, I realised that when you learn Japanese, the methods used for European languages won't enable smooth progress. Supporting you in learning Japanese effectively is crucial.

Also, soon after launching the academy, I started learning support events like the “Learning Session in Japanese” for speaking with actual Japanese people and JAPAN FOCUS for understanding Japanese culture. I am grateful to all the members who supported these events.

I suppose I wanted to act more as your supporter than as a teacher. Actually, I also created the Japanese Language Teachers group on LinkedIn a year ago just because I wanted to support Japanese learners who were taking lessons from those teachers worldwide.

The Importance of Learning at Your Own Pace

Arai Academy began focusing on private lessons because I realised that learning at your own pace is crucial for keeping learning for your progress.

When I attended group Spanish lessons at a UK university, my British classmates learned much faster than I did. As a native Japanese speaker, I struggled to keep up and completely lost confidence.

Also, I noticed that somehow the busier people tended to be the ones most keen to learn Japanese. All my students are extremely busy, yet many have continued for an average of around 8 years, and one has been learning for as long as 14 years (before I started my academy!). They keep learning Japanese because they can steadily improve at their own pace.

Almost 100% of students who take our trial lesson continue to start regular lessons. Everyone is motivated, and I've truly enjoyed every single lesson over the past 10 years!

I started asking other teachers to teach when my schedule did not work with some new students. One of them had been with another teacher for eight years, and I'm so lucky to have such wonderful teachers and they said they wanted to work with me.

I've developed my unique teaching methods over these past 20 years and my handmade material with PowerPoint slides are so popular among my students. In order to make these accessible for more learners like you wherever you are, I've finally created lesson videos from my PowerPoint. I'd be delighted if my online course, Master Speaking Japanese, helps you gain the confidence to speak Japanese at your own pace!

The joy of mutual understanding is valuable

When I was studying English, I couldn't speak at all and felt utterly lacking in confidence, so there were many times I felt like giving up. Yet I've experienced moments where the greatest joy came from truly connecting with foreigners. The first time I worked (as a waitress!) in English, when backpacking across Asia and Europe for seven months and during my three months in Turkey – those moments when I managed conversations with locals were an amazing experience. Even when I gave my first presentation in English, I was praised for the content.

After all, communication with others isn't just about words; it's the heartfelt connection where both parties genuinely want to understand each other that makes communication possible. That joy is beyond words!

So, it would be great if more people can experience this and feel connected worldwide. It would be a great joy to share that feeling with more people in the world!

For example, one of my students who had zero Japanese took just three lessons before his business trip to Japan. He told me that he was able to build an excellent rapport with his Japanese clients, and his business went successful.

This kind of skill is different from Japanese language skills, but wouldn't it be wonderful if more people worldwide could connect in this way?

By the way, when I was in Istanbul, I even enjoyed heartfelt communication with cats I met walking down the street! It seemed they understood my attitude of trying to understand them. (lol)

Finally, what has remained unchanged throughout these ten years is my desire to support each person who begins learning Japanese, enabling them to continue at a pace suited to their own busy lives.

It can be challenging to keep up with Japanese when your job, where you live, or your lifestyle changes, I know. But if you keep going without giving up, no matter what happens in your life, you will inevitably get closer to your goal. Your dream of “being able to communicate confidently in Japanese” is my dream too!

For the last 10 years, my activities were mainly in the UK. My students have gained the confidence to speak and feel that studying Japanese has been worthwhile. For the next 10 years, I wish to support even more people worldwide in their Japanese learning. Everyone, if you create a learning environment where you can keep going, you will get closer to your goal.

あらいアカデミー10周年をきっかけに、この10年間を振り返りました。今まで頑張れたのはやっぱり日本を愛してくれる皆さんに心から感謝していて、そんなみなさんをサポートしたいという気持ちが全てでした。日本にとって日本語を学んでいる皆さんは宝ですから。人によって勉強する目的は旅行、ビジネス、仕事、趣味などいろいろだと思いますが、①学び続けられる環境、②日本人とのコミュニケーションへの自信、③サポートがある安心感の３つを与えたかったんです。やっぱり「日本語を勉強して良かった！」という皆さんの笑顔と成功が見たいですからね。

でも、最初は本当に怖かったです。ロンドン大学SOASで応用日本語言語学を学び、2006年からイギリスの大学でフルタイムで教えるようになり、やっと日本語の教え方がわかってきた頃がちょうど10年前でした。2012年にキングスカレッジで教育ビジネスのMBAを取得できたんですが、成功は約束されていないし、自分のアカデミーを始めるなんて、とても勇気がいることでした。ビジネスをしている人が周りにぜんぜんいなかったし、一人でのスタートでした。

でも、皆さんが日本を好きでいてくれて、日本語が学びたいと思ってくれていること、そして皆さんをサポートたいという思いが私のエネルギー源でした。ですから、みなさんのおかげで怖さを乗り越えてこられたんだと確信しています！

教師というよりサポーターの私

①　続けることへのサポート

大学生だけじゃなく、仕事をしていても日本語を学びたい人がたくさんいますよね。忙しくても日本語の勉強を始めてくれたことに心から感謝しています。

もちろん、続けるのは大変ですが、一度日本語を学ぼうと思ってくれた一人一人が忙しくても、あきらめないで続けられる環境を作ってサポートしたいという気持ちでいっぱいでした。

②　コミュニケーションへの自信

日本人と心と心が通い合うコミュニケーションができたら嬉しいですよね。いつも「Mind=Expressions」と言っていますが、日本人の考え方や感じ方がわかって、自然な表現や感じのいい振る舞いができるようにサポートしたいと思いました。日本語で接することに自信を持てる人がもっと多くなったら最高ですね。

③　学びのサポート

日本人の私が英語をマスターするのは大変で、スペイン語が母語の友だちが遊んでいても英語の試験でいい成績が取れて、毎日頑張っていた私の成績が低いという辛い経験をしました。

それで、みなさんが日本語を学ぶとき、ヨーロッパ言語の学び方ではスムーズに学べないので、まず日本語の学び方をサポートすることが大切だと思いました。

そして、アカデミーを始めてすぐに実際に日本人と話す「日本語で学ぶ会」や日本文化を理解するJAPAN FOCUというイベントも始めました。このようなイベントをサポートしてくださった日本人の皆さんに心から感謝しています。

たぶん、私は教師というより皆さんのサポーターとして活動したかったんだと思います。最近では1年前にLinkedInで日本語教師会を立ち上げたのも、世界中の日本語学習者をサポートするために、その先生方もサポートしたかったんです。

自分のペースで学ぶことの大切さ

あらいアカデミーが個人レッスンにフォーカスして始めたのは、マイペースなら続けられると分かったからです。

イギリスの大学でスペイン語のグループレッスンに参加したとき、イギリス人のクラスメイトはとても速く学べるのに、日本語が母語の私にはついていくのが大変で、完全に自信を失いました。

それから、5年ぐらい前に気が付いたんですが、忙しい人ほど日本語を学びたいという傾向でした。私の生徒は全員とても忙しいですが、長い人は14年、平均8年ぐらい続いている人もたくさんいます。自分のペースで着実にレベルアップしていけるから、続くんですね。

生徒たちはお試しレッスンを受けるとほぼ１００％レッスンを開始してくれて、みんなやる気があって、この10年間、毎回のレッスンは心から楽しかったです。

私の時間が足りなくなったら、他の先生におねがいするようになりました。この生徒たちも8年続けてくれた人もいて、とても素敵な先生方が一緒に働きたいと言ってくれたので、本当に感謝しています。

今は私がこの20年間作り上げてきた独自教材を使ったレッスンを世界中の皆さんにも受けられるように、私のパワーポイントを動画化しました。Master Speaking Japaneseというオンライン教材で自分のペースで自信を持って日本語が話せるようになってもらえたら嬉しいです！

心が通じ合える喜びが大事

私が英語を勉強していた時、全然話せなくて、本当に自信がなかったので、あきらめたくなる時が何回もありました。でも、心が通じ合えることが何よりの喜びだと感じた経験があります。初めて英語で仕事をして何とかできたこと、アジアからヨーロッパまで7か月バックパックカーとして一人旅した時に何とか現地の人たちと会話ができたり、トルコに3か月いた時も何とか通じたのが最高に嬉しかったです。初めて英語でプレゼンした時も内容が良かったと褒められたこともありました。

やっぱり、相手とのコミュニケーションは言葉だけではない、お互いが理解し合いたいという心のつながりがあってこそ、コミュにケーションができて、その喜びはことばにできません！

だから、もっとたくさんの人がこのような体験ができたら、もっとすてな世界でつながれますね。それを皆さんと感じられたら幸せだと思っていました。

例えば日本語ゼロのレベルで日本に出張が決まって3回レッスンを受けた生徒が、クライアントと素晴らしい信頼関係を作れて、ビジネスが成功したと喜んでいました。

日本語のレベルや学習目的とはまた別のスキルですが、このような接し方ができる人が世界中に増えたら素敵ですよね。

余談ですが、イスタンブールでは道を歩いている猫とも心が良い合うコミュニケーションが楽しめました！猫の気持ちをわかろうという姿勢が伝わったようです。（笑）

最後に、この10年ずっと変わらなかったことは「日本語を始めた一人一人が忙しい生活の中でもそれぞれに合ったペースで続けられるようにサポートしたい」ということでした。

仕事や住む所が変わったり、ライフスタイルが変わると日本語を続けるのは大変ですよね。よくわかります。でも、何が起きても諦めないで続ければ、必ずゴールに近づきます。みなさんの「自信を持って日本語でコミュニケーションができるようになりたい」という夢が私の夢です。

今までの10年はイギリスを中心に活動してきました。生徒たちは自信を持って話せるようになって、日本語を勉強していて良かったと思ってくれています。これからの10年は世界中のより多くの人たちの日本語学習をサポートしたいです。みなさん、続けられる環境を作れば、ゴールに近づけます。
