We celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Arai Academy of Japanese Studies this year, and we were honoured to have our students living in the UK, and also Japanese members such as the teachers from the University of London where I used to teach Japanese.

Mamiko Takatori is a master of the ลŒbaku Kลfลซ-ryลซ school of sencha tea ceremony, visited from Japan and held a tea ceremony for our students. She brought all the tea utensils and kimono from Japan and created a tea ceremony atmosphere in London. We cannot appreciate her enough.

Unlike afternoon tea, Japanese tea ceremonies cannot be reserved at hotels. (*Originally, only invited guests were able to participate in these events.) Even when traveling in Japan, it is rare to get a chance to attend a tea ceremony, and I think many Japanese people also haven’t tried one even in Japan.

Now, I’d like to explain about the tea ceremony. There are two types of tea ceremonies, depending on how the tea is made: matcha tea ceremony and sencha tea ceremony. Matcha is made from powdered tea leaves, which are mixed with hot water and then drunk. Sencha, on the other hand, uses whole tea leaves, so like black tea, the leaves are not drunk.

Shizuoka is famous for its green tea production, and both the tea master and I are from Shizuoka, where we have a habit of drinking sencha tea with our families from morning till evening. Of course, I also drink sencha tea whenever I feel like it, even when I'm alone. At tea ceremonies, sencha tea is served as a form of hospitality and we enjoy it together with everyone.

Sencha mainly refers to this method of brewing tea, but when we talk about ‘ryokucha’ (green tea), we are referring to the types of tea, such as sencha, bancha, and gyokuro.

The name “Kลfลซ” means “the atmosphere of the space spreads out,” implying that everyone present can enjoy a pleasant time together.

Can you see “Kลfลซ” written on this ‘kaishi’ (paper used to place sweets)?

First, you drink the first cup of tea, then eat the sweets before drinking the second cup. This is because the first cup has a delicate flavour, so if you eat the sweets before drinking it, you cannot appreciate the mild taste of the tea much. The second cup is stronger, so it’s better to eat the sweets before drinking it.

Many things are taken into consideration in order to fully appreciate the taste.

This is a comment from the master.

"I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to attend Mineko-sensei’s celebration with my daughter.

Additionally, hosting a sencha tea ceremony experience for foreign guests and engaging in cultural exchange was a truly enriching experience.

Seeing foreign guests take an interest in and enjoy the sencha tea that Japanese people drink daily, and their appreciation for our hospitality, has left me with unforgettable memories.

We sincerely thank Mineko-sensei, who warmly welcomed us and created this opportunity for exchange, as well as all the guests.

If you ever visit Japan, please come to the ลŒbaku Kลfลซ-ryลซ in Shizuoka.

I will serve even more varieties of tea for you to enjoy.

Thank you very much!"
