MY STORY - グローバル・コミュニケーションと私

皆さん、いつも日本語を勉強してくれて、どうもありがとうございます。日本にとってとても大切な存在です。日本が好きでいてくれている皆さんがスムーズに日本人とコミュニケーションができて、笑顔で会話が楽しめたら、本当に幸せです。

Thank you very much for loving Japan and studying Japanese. You are very important to Japan. I will be very happy if you can communicate with Japanese people smoothly and enjoy conversation with a smile!

だから、がんばっている皆さんが楽しく勉強が続けられるようにサポートすることが私の情熱で生きがいです。今回は私がどうして日本語を教えるようになったか、これまでの話をしたいと思います。

Therefore, my passion and 'ikigai (my life value)' is to support everyone who is working hard so that they can continue their studies in an enjoyable way. In this article, I would like to talk about how I became a Japanese language teacher.

実は中学生の時、英語ができなかったのは「絶対に外国に行かない」と思っていたからです。そんな私が英語教師になり、その後7か月アジア・ヨーロッパをバックパッカー旅行し、イギリスの大学で日本語教師になり、Arai Academy of Japanese Studiesを始め、世界中の日本語学習者をサポートしたくてMaster Speaking Japaneseというオンラインコースを作りました。

Actually, I wasn't good at English when I was a junior high school student because I thought I would never go abroad. However, I became an English teacher, then backpacked from Asia to Europe for 7 months, became a Japanese teacher at UK universities, started the Arai Academy of Japanese Studies, and created an online course - Master Speaking Japanese online course to support Japanese language learners around the world.

今回は私の人生の3つの夢について簡単にお話しします。

①   どうして日本語教師になったか

②   どうしてArai Academy of Japanese Studiesを始めたか

③   どうしてMaster Speaking Japanese（オンライン会話教材）を作ったか

I would like to talk briefly about my three dreams in life.

① The reason why I became a Japanese teacher

② The reason why I started the Arai Academy of Japanese Studies

③ The reason why I create Master Speaking Japanese (an online conversation materials)

１）どうして日本語教師になったか? The reason why I became a Japanese language teacher

17歳の時異文化に興味を持ち、世界中の人たちとコミュニケーションができたらいいなと思いました。それからたくさん勉強して英語教師になって、毎日がとても楽しかったです。ときどき英語のネイティブの先生に日本語について聞かれて、日本語を教えるのが楽しくなって、外国人に日本語を教える方が面白いかもしれないと思いました。

When I was 17, I was interested in different cultures and thought it would be nice to communicate with people from all over the world. I then studied a lot and became an English teacher and enjoyed every single day. Sometimes native English teachers asked me about the Japanese language and I enjoyed teaching Japanese and thought it might be more interesting to teach Japanese to foreigners.

ちょうど２０００年ごろで、日本語教師の仕事があまりなくて、なるのが大変だとわかっていましたが、それでも、なることに決めました。

It was just around the year 2000 and there were not many jobs for Japanese language teachers and I knew it would be hard to become one, but I still decided to become one.

外国で日本語教師を目指した理由はこの3つです。

a.   生徒たちが住んでいる国で教えたかった

b.   生徒たちが話す言葉がわかっていた方が教えやすい思った

c.   生徒たちの考え方がわかったほうが教えやすいと思って、そのために生徒たちの国の文化が理解できる自分になりたかった

These three are the reasons why I chose to teach in another country.

a.     I wanted to teach outside of Japan where my students live

b.     It would be easier to teach if I understand the language they spoke

c.     It would be easier to teach if I understand their mind-set, so I wanted to understand their culture.

日本語教育で歴史があるロンドン大学SOASで修士課程を取った理由はイギリスで就職しやすいと思ったからです。アカデミック英語を読んで理解するのも大変でしたが、それでも卒業論文を書きながら就職活動をしました。大学の先生などから「日本語教師になるのは難しいから、日本に帰って他の仕事をしたほうがいい」というアドバイスをいただきましたが、そんな現状が受け入れられませんでした。

I took a master's degree at SOAS, University of London, which has a long history in Japanese Studies, because I wanted to get a position in the UK. It was hard to read and understand academic English, but I was job-hunting while writing my dissertation. My teachers at the university and others  advised me that it would be difficult to get a position and it's better to go back to Japan and get another job, but I could not accept such a situation.

就労ビザが必要なので、フルタイムの仕事を探していたら大学での募集を見つけました。採用条件のイギリスの大学で最低2年以上の経験はなかったし、世界中から経験ある先生方からたくさん申し込みがあったそうなんですが、なんとか採用していただくことができて、無事に私のキャリアが始まりました。

I needed a working visa, so I was looking for a full-time job and found a position at a university. I didn't have the requirement of minimum two years' experience at a UK university, many experienced teachers applied for this limited opportunity from all over the world, but I was so lucky to have got the post and my career started.

今まで何回もくじけそうになって、このまま諦めて日本に帰るか、それとも可能性を信じてがんばるか、何度も決断を迫られました。それでも、諦めなくて本当に良かったです。たぶん、自分の夢を諦められなかった、自分の人生を後悔したくなかったんですね。情熱を失わないで持ち続けることが自分に正直に生きるということだと実感しました。

I have felt like giving up many times and had to decide many times whether to just give up and go back to Japan, or to believe in my future possibility and keep trying. After all, I am really glad that I didn't give up. Maybe I couldn't give up on my dream, I didn't want to regret my life. Now I can say that being honest to yourself helps you to hold on to your passion without losing it.

その後キングスカレッジやロンドン大学SOAS、外務省でも教える機会をいただきましたが、情熱で仕事をしていたので、毎回楽しくて役に立つレッスンをするために毎日わかりやすい教材や話したくなる会話タスクを作るのがとても楽しかったです。イギリスではレッスンの時しか日本語を話すチャンスがないので、レッスン中はできるだけ話す時間にしました。

I then had the opportunity to teach at King's College London, SOAS, University of London and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. I was working with passion, I really enjoyed creating easy-to-understand materials and conversation tasks that students wanted to talk about to make every lesson fun and useful. In the UK, the only chance to speak Japanese is during lessons, so I tried to maximise their speaking skills as much as possible during the lessons.

2) どうしてArai Academy of Japanese Studiesを始めたか　The reason why I started Arai Academy of Japanese Studies

私にとって、皆さんが日本語を始めようと思ってくれたことがとても嬉しいので、そのやる気を持ち続けてほしいし、「日本語を勉強してよかった」という気持ちでいてほしいと本気で願っています。そして、皆さんの夢だった日本人と日本語でコミュニケーションできたと感じられたらすてきですし、そのサポートができたら、私は本当に幸せです。

It makes me happy that you have decided to start learning Japanese, and I really want you to keep that motivation and feel happy about your decision. It would be wonderful if I can support your dream, communicating with Japanese people in Japanese.

毎回のレッスンで生徒が１００％楽しめたら、私も１００％良かったと思えるので、win-winのレッスンをしたいと心から願うようになりました。

I realised that providing win-win lessons for both my students and me is truly satisfactory, because if the students enjoy 100% of each lesson, I feel 100% happy for them too.

それで、たいてい準備にレッスンの3～５倍ぐらいの時間を使いましたが、どんなにいろいろ考えて準備をしても、解消できなかったことがあります。それはグループレッスンでは一人一人のニーズを１００％満たせないということでした。最初はモチベーションが高かった生徒もペースなどが合わなくて、コースをやめてしまう人がいて、とても悲しかったです。

So I usually spent three to five hours for a 1 hour lesson for preparation, but no matter how much thought and preparation I put into it, there was one thing I couldn't solve. That was that group lessons could not meet 100% of each individual's needs. It was very sad to see some students who were very motivated at the beginning dropping out of the course because they didn't feel comfortable with the pace etc.

大学で教えていた時からプライベートレッスンを受けてくれていた生徒たちがいて、プライベートならwin-winのレッスンができるとわかりました。もう13年以上、今でも毎週レッスンを受け続けてくれている生徒もいて、とても嬉しいです。

Some of my students were taking private lessons with me when I was teaching at universities and I found that private lessons were a win-win situation. One of them has still been taking a lesson every week for over 13 years, which makes me absolutely happy.

無事永住権が取れた10年前、プライベートレッスンが中心のArai Academy of Japanese Studiesを始めることにしました。レッスンに加えて、生徒一人一人の性格に合わせて学び方もアドバイスし、日本人と話す機会として「日本語で学ぶ会」やArai Academyのパーティーなどのイベントもしています。

10 years ago, after obtaining permanent residence in the UK, I decided to start the Arai Academy of Japanese Studies, which mainly offers private lessons. In addition to lessons, I also give advice on how to learn effectively by considering each student's personality and learning style and organise events such as “Learning Session in Japanese” and Arai Academy parties as opportunities to talk with Japanese people.

本当にすてきな生徒たちで、毎回のレッスンが心から楽しくて、このような深い関係が作れていることにとても感謝しています。また、日本に行った生徒たちから、「日本人と日本語で話したら、すごく喜んでくれて、楽しい時間が過ごせて、最高の思い出になりました」という話を聞くたびに、この仕事をしていて本当に良かったと思います。

They are absolutely lovely students and I really enjoy every lesson with them and I am very grateful that we have such a deep relationship. Also, every time my students who came back from Japan tell me that they were very happy when they spoke to Japanese people in Japanese, that they had a great time and that it is a great memory in their life. I feel wonderful to be helpful for their life experiences.

３）どうしてMaster Speaking Japanese (オンライン会話教材)を作ったか　The reason why I created the Master Speaking Japanese (online self-study course)

私は生徒たちが自分の国で日本語を勉強しても「話せるようになる」ことにフォーカスしているので、いつも私が作った「話すための文法とタスク」の教材でレッスンをしています。

My focus is on helping my students to “learn to speak” even if they are studying Japanese in their own country, so I always create my “grammar and tasks for speaking skills” materials for my lessons.

プライベートレッスンを受けたい生徒はたいてい話す練習がしたいと言い、読み書きや聞く教材はたくさんあっても、話すための教材がなかったそうです。生徒たちはみんな私の教材が「わかりやすい！」「自信がついた！」と言ってくれるので、時間をかけて作ってよかったと感じ、話せるようになっていくのを見るのが一番嬉しいです。

Most students who wanted private lessons said they wanted to practise speaking, and although they had lots of reading, writing and listening materials, they didn't have any materials for speaking. My students all found my material ‘easy to understand!´, 'I feel more confident! ' I feel glad that I spent a lot of time creating them, and I am most happy to see them improve their speaking skills.

でも、私が教えられる時間には限りがあるし、プライベートレッスンの生徒だけが私の教材で楽しく学べて話せるようになるというのは不公平だと感じ始めました。どうしたらもっとたくさんの人に自分の教材を共有し、会話中心のレッスンができるか考え始めました。

However, my teaching time is limited and I started thinking that it was unfair that only my private students were able to access my materials and enjoy learning and improving speaking. Then, I started thinking about how to share my speaking based material with more people.

グループレッスンではwin-winのレッスンが難しいので他の方法を何年間も考えました。自信を持って話せるように、自分のペースでよく使う表現から勉強できて、アウトプットも自分でチェックできるように考えました。

I thought about other methods for years because it is difficult to have win-win lessons in group lessons. I wanted to design a course for effective learning by using more relevant expressions at their own pace so that they can speak confidently and check their output by themselves as well.
