Kizuki #5 Why Japanese People Struggle to Express Their Thoughts — A Look at the Education System —
Sep 22, 2026I organize a monthly Learning Session where Japanese people and Japanese learners explore cross‑cultural communication through different themes. One Japanese participant once said:
“When someone asks me a question, I can’t answer quickly.”
I understood her deeply — because I used to feel exactly the same.
Growing up in Japan, the way we learn is very different from Western education. We spend very little time practising how to think through a question.
So when someone suddenly asks something, the mind often becomes quiet — not because we lack opinions, but because we were never taught how to use them.
Later, when I studied in the UK, I realised how different the educational approach was — and how much easier my life would have been if I had learned to think and express myself earlier.
That discovery changed the way I think and speak in a global setting — and it continues to shape how I teach today.
I hope this insight into Japanese education helps you communicate more smoothly with Japanese people.
