I had a reunion with my old colleagues from SOAS, University of London, in Brighton last weekend! We enjoyed seafood together by the beach and talked about old times.

In this article, I'd like to look back on the history of Japanese language education together.

In the 1980s, thanks to Japan's bubble economy, there were apparently many people studying Japanese. However, in the 2000s, 20 years ago, I call it the ‘Ice Age’ for Japanese language learning, because not many people studied Japanese. I never met any Japanese teachers outside of the university.

Today, smartphones and social media have changed many things. Japanese culture is now known worldwide, and it's not just university students—many office workers and businesspeople are learning Japanese too.

Learning methods have dramatically changed. You don’t have to attend lessons with a school timetable; you can now easily study Japanese anywhere using apps or online courses. Back in the day, flashcards meant physically holding hiragana cards and flashing them during lessons.

We shared the hiragana table among the lecturers and used it by sticking it on the blackboard. Nowadays, with online lessons, we simply share PowerPoint slides on the computer screen and click through them.

I really couldn't have imagined such a time would come back in 2002 when I first dreamt about becoming a Japanese language teacher. That's why I cannot stop saying to you ‘Thank you for learning Japanese.’ from the bottom of my heart. You are so valuable for Japan. Thank you so very much!

By the way, do you know which university has the longest history of Japanese studies and Japanese language education in the world (outside of Japan)? It is actually SOAS, University of London! Established in 1916, it is also renowned for having the largest number of specialists in Japanese studies and education outside Japan.

I studied MA in Applied Japanese Linguistics as a postgraduate at SOAS from 2005 to 2006. Later on, I was offered a teaching position by a teacher from the university , and I was absolutely lucky to participate in the 2016 centenary celebrations for SOAS's Japanese Studies programme as a member of the SOAS faculty.

It is truly a privilege to have taught at the university with the longest history in Japanese language education in my life, and I feel absolutely grateful for having a long relationship with my senior teachers from SOAS since then. Our reunion was such a great time together.

Seiko Harumi sensei, Mariko Skorupski sensei and Keiko Kelly sensei also attended the Arai Academy of Japanese Studies' 10th anniversary party in July 2025. Unfortunately, Harumi sensei wasn’t able to attend the reunion last week, but the three of us enjoyed talking about the time at SOAS.

Today,  it's amazing that it’s so easy to learn Japanese online and you have access to resources for studying grammar and phrases in your own country.

ロンドン大学SOASの先生方とブライトンでリユニオン（同窓会？）をしました！ビーチの前でシーフード料理も一緒に楽しみながら、思い出話で盛り上がりました。

今回は日本語教育の歴史を一緒に振り返りたいと思います。

1980年代には日本のバブル経済のおかげで日本語を勉強する人がたくさんいたそうですが、今から20年前の2000年代は日本語を学ぶ人があまりいなかったまさに氷河期で、日本語教師に会うことも、大学以外では全くありませんでした。

それが今ではスマホとSNSのおかげ世界中で日本文化が知られるようになり、大学生だけじゃなく会社員やビジネスをしている人も日本語を学ぶ人が多くなりましたね。

学び方も決まった時間にレッスンに行かなくても、アプリやオンラインのコースなどで気軽にどこでも日本語を勉強できるようになりました。昔はフラッシュカードと言えば、本当にひらがなカードを手に持って、フラッシュして授業をしていたんです。

ひらがな表も大学の先生同士で共有していて、黒板に貼って使っていました。今ではオンラインレッスンでパソコンのスクリーン上でパワーポイントをシェアしてスライドをクリックするだけですね。

私が日本語教師になろうと思い始めた2002年の状況からはこんな時代が来るなんて本当に信じられませんでした。だからこそ、いつもみなさんに「日本語を学んでくれてありがとう」と心から言いたくなるんです。みなさんは本当に日本にとって宝なんです。本当にありがとうございます！

ところで、日本研究と日本語教育の歴史が一番長い大学がどこか知っていますか？実はロンドン大学SOASです！１９１６年からあって、日本国外で日本研究と教育の専門家が一番多いことでも有名です。

私はSOASで2005年から2006年まで大学院生として応用日本語言語学を学びましたが、その後SOASの先生からお仕事の機会をいただき、２０１６年のSOASの日本研究の学部創立100周年のイベントにはSOASの教員として参加できたことがとても嬉しいです。

日本語教育で一番長い歴史がある大学で教えた経験は本当にありがたいことで、今でもその当時から教えていた先輩であるSOASの先生方とリユニオンができることに心から感謝しています。

春海聖子先生、スコルプスキーまりこ先生、ケリー恵子先生はArai Academy of Japanese Studiesの10周年のパーティーにも来てくださいました。お祝いのコメントはこちらのリンクからご覧になれます。今回のリユニオンでは残念ながら春海先生は来られませんでしたが、3人でSOASの話で盛り上がりました。

オンライン上で気軽に日本語が学べるようになった今、みなさんの国で文法やフレーズが勉強できる環境はほんとうにすばらしいことですね。
