The Way Cats Live: Honest, Upward, Unhidden

What I Learned from Watching Cats
I love cats, and whenever I see one, my eyes naturally follow it. By watching them, I began to notice their patterns.
One day, I realized something. When a cat wants to go outside, it quietly sits in front of the door and gazes at the world it cannot yet see. That attitude is the very act of mezashii—to look straight toward where you want to go. They simply look straight toward where they want to go, and keep doing so with quiet dedication.
How Humans and Cats “Look Toward a Direction” Differently
Some people try to look toward their dreams or goals. Others avoid looking at them. But cats are different. Every cat keeps its eyes fixed on where it wants to go. I have never seen a cat look away from its direction.
Sometimes my heart drifts, and I feel it might be easier not to look at where I want to go. In those moments, a cat’s attitude gives me courage. It makes me think, I want to live like a cat.
Cats Always Look Up
Recently, I noticed something even more interesting. Cats don’t just look toward their direction—they look up.
I have never seen a cat wait at the door with its head down. Looking up is deeply connected to “living forward” for humans. Cats do this naturally.
The Power of Not Giving Up
When the door doesn’t open, a cat quietly looks back at its human. Its eyes say, “Please open it.” And we usually give in.
Cats don’t give up. They believe in possibility and simply keep looking.
For humans, continuing to look toward our direction is not easy. But even a cat that cannot open a door gains power by looking at it.
Cats Don’t Wear a Mask
In Japanese, neko wo kaburu means to hide your true self. But cats never hide who they are. They don’t read people’s faces. They don’t try to be liked. They don’t flatter. They simply live as they are.
And still, they are loved. Their very existence is appreciated. I find that beautiful.
Living “Here and Now”
I love the way cats live. Just being “here” is enough. They remind me that life itself is something to be grateful for.
That’s why I sometimes feel the phrase neko wo kaburu is unfair to cats. Cats live straight, without wearing anything.
Being “Myself” in the Online Era
In this online, SNS, and AI era, people I meet from LinkedIn often say, “You’re exactly the same in person.”
At first, I didn’t understand. Later, I realized many people look different online.
With AI filters everywhere, I seem to have wanted to show my true self. Filters make me feel like I’m no longer me. Especially when meeting someone for the first time, I want them to see who I really am—even online.
Of course, using filters is perfectly fine. But because I wanted to live like a cat, I naturally stopped using them.
Being Natural with People
Yesterday, I attended a real estate company’s anniversary party. In a room full of strangers, I stayed natural. With a glass of rosé prosecco, I simply enjoyed talking with the people around me.
Like a cat that doesn’t flatter, I just enjoyed the atmosphere.
At the end, the host said, “Come visit anytime.” I love relationships that deepen naturally like this.
At Halloween parties, I sometimes wear cat ears or a costume, but inside, I’m always living like a cat— at my own pace, as I am, enjoying the moment.
My thoughts
Cats live without wearing anything. They look straight toward where they want to go, they look up, and they sit quietly in the present moment. I admire that.
I’ve wanted to live that way too. I’ve been misunderstood, and I’ve lost things. But still, I want to stay as I am. I love this way of living.
Looking toward where I want to go. Looking up. Being myself.
How does a cat’s way of living feel to you? If something stays quietly in your heart, that alone makes me happy.
For Those Seeking Better Communication with Japanese People
To everyone involved in business with Japan, I am truly grateful. Sometimes communication differences make things harder than they need to be.
But if you want to keep looking toward your direction, and move forward without giving up, I created an online mini-course called Executive Japanese Communication.
I created this course because I truly want more people to succeed, and to open a new chapter in their work with Japan.
By understanding Japanese thinking and socio-cultural foundations, you can achieve Maximum results in Minimum time.
This program began from a simple wish: to make the essential lessons I teach busy executives—the ones that create the biggest impact—available to anyone, anywhere.
I hope it helps your communication with Japanese people become smoother, reduces misunderstandings, and brings you closer to the success you’re aiming for.
