My Journey As a Japanese Teacher - Thanks To My Former Boss at King's College London

Life changes through the people we meet. I　have met many people over the years, been given incredible opportunities, and been influenced in my way of thinking and living.

人生は人との出会いで変わりますね。私も今までいろいろな人に出会い、信じられないチャンスをいただいたり、考え方や生き方にたくさんの影響を受けました。

2025 was the 10th anniversary of Arai Academy, so in this article, I'd like to share about my 17 years with Kaoru Godoy - sensei, my former boss at King's College London and a true benefactor in my life. I'll talk about our work at the university, my life in London, and how she continues to support the academy I started even after her retirement.

2025年はArai Academyの１０周年だったので、今回は私の人生の「恩人」であるキングス・カレッジ・ロンドンの元上司、ゴドイかおる先生との17年間についてお話しします。大学での仕事、私のロンドンでの生活、また先生が退職したあと、今でも私が始めたアカデミーをサポートしてくれています。

＜Meeting Godoy- senseiゴドイ先生との出会い＞

Ever since I was a student at SOAS, University of London in 2005, I'd seen her at conferences of the British Association of Teachers of Japanese and admired her from afar, thinking how wonderful it would be to work with someone like her.

2005年にロンドン大学SOASの学生だった時から、「英国日本語教師会」の学会などで会って、すてきな方だなと遠くから見ていて、あのような人と一緒に働けたらいいなと感じていました。

After working at the University of Sheffield for three years, I was returning to London in 2009, so I decided to approach Godoy-sensei for the first time at a conference.

シェフィールド大学に3年間務めた後、2009年にロンドンに戻ることになったので、ある学会で初めてゴドイ先生に話しかけてみました。

What I couldn't believe was that I immediately received a job offer at the Modern Language Centre at King's College London, sent my CV right away, went through an interview, and was hired! I was also overjoyed when Godoy-sensei later told me, “It was like a goddess descended from heaven!” Who knew something like this could happen? If I hadn't spoken up back then, my life might have taken a completely different path.

信じられなかったことは、その時すぐにキングスカレッジでのお仕事のオファーをいただいて、すぐに履歴書を送って、面接、そして採用が決まったことです。先生が後から、「天から女神が降ってきたようだった！」と言ってくれたことも嬉しすぎました。こんなことがあるんですね。あの時話しかけなかったら、全く違う人生だったかもしれません。

＜My work at King’s College London大学での仕事＞

I am truly grateful that there were experienced teachers, but Godoy-sensei trusted me with various tasks. Experiencing her warmth left me deeply moved time and again.

経験がある先生がいるのに、新人の私を信頼してくれて、いろいろな仕事をさせてくれたことには心から感謝しています。先生のあたたかさに触れて、感動の連続でした。

About 20 years ago, there weren't many people learning Japanese, so there wasn't much work. But Godoy-sensei supported me in various ways to help increase my work opportunities.

今から２０年ぐらい前は日本語を学ぶ人が少なかったので、仕事があまりありませんでした。でも、私の仕事が増えるようにいろいろサポートしてくれました。

For example, King's College London offers private lessons too, and when a student Godoy-sensei had previously taught expressed interest in taking lessons again, she asked me to teach him. My relationship with him continues to today.

例えば、キングス・カレッジは大学のプライベートレッスンもあって、ゴドイ先生が以前教えていた生徒さんがまたレッスンを受けたいと言った時、私に担当させてくれました。この生徒との関係は今も続いています。

In 2013, when the senior executives—including the president of Dentsu's London office—requested a trial Japanese lesson to the university, I was asked, “Why don't you give it a try?” When I did, they immediately made a contract with the university. I was truly delighted to be helpful for the university and the company. In fact, I still maintain a relationship with the executive who chose me back then, and that connection later led to a contract with Arai Academy!

2013年に大学に電通のロンドン支社長も含めた上役に日本語コースのお試しレッスンの依頼があった時も「やってみない？」と言われやってみたら、即、大学側との契約をいただき、お役に立てて本当にうれしかったです。実はこの時私を選んでくれた上役の方とは今も関係が続いていて、その後Arai Academyとの契約にもつながりました。

She gave me various opportunities I addition to my Japanese courses.

She said to me, “Why not give it a try?” and gave me the opportunity to work at the Language Resource Centre, to lead workshops for faculty teachers, and even present as the representative from King's College London at the British Association of Teachers of Japanese. These were all wonderful experiences. It was amazing to realize that I eventually stood out at the faculty.

日本語のコース以外にもいろいろな機会をいただきました。

学部の図書室での仕事や、学部の先生向けのワークショップや、「英国日本語教師会」でキングスカレッジ代表として発表する機会なども「やってみない？」と言われ、すばらしい経験させていただきました。気が付いたら学部で信頼されていたようで、とても嬉しく思います。

＜Roll model as a boss上司としてのモデル＞

Godoy-sensei always prioritized creating a supportive environment for each teacher to work comfortably. Whenever I faced difficulties, she always provided her time to support me.

ゴドイ先生は一人一人の先生が働きやすい環境を一番に考えてくれて、私が困っているときには必ず自分の時間を使って、心の支えになってくれました。

For example, she always brought her hand made rice balls to our meetings, and she created a very warm and enjoyable atmosphere.

例えば、ミーティングの時にはいつも手作りのおにぎりをくださって、とてもあたたかい雰囲気で楽しかったです。

She allowed me to do whatever I wanted to do, always accepted my new ideas for teaching materials and courses, introduced me to a Spanish teacher when I said I wanted to learn Spanish, and let me participate in the university course.

私がやりたいことを何でもさせてくれて、教材やコースについて新しいアイデアを出すと、いつも採用してくれたし、スペイン語を習いたいと言ったらスペイン語の先生も紹介してくれ、大学のコースに参加させてくれました。

She treats me nicely in private too, inviting me out for meals after work and treating me to dinner. Even now, she invites me to her home and serves me her homemade sushi. She celebrates my birthday every year. The time with her always makes me feel warm.

プライベートでも親しくしてくださり、仕事の後、食事に誘ってご馳走してくださり、今でもお家に呼んで手作りのお寿司をふるまってくれます。毎年私の誕生日も祝ってくれます。先生と過ごす時間はいつも心があたたまります。

＜Support for Arai Academyサポート＞

Now she even supports my academy's activities and helps my events. Last year, when my student Anastasia, who is a Japanese art dealer, held an exhibition, we went to see it together. This year, when I held my birthday webinars, she shared the information and even participated too. From the moment we met until now, she has supported me in so many ways, and I cannot thank her enough for our relationship.

今では私が行うイベントなども宣伝してくださり、アカデミーの活動を支援してくれています。去年は私の生徒で日本美術を扱っているアナスタシアさんが展示会をした時、一緒に見に行ったり、今年は私のバースデーウェビナーをした時、宣伝してくれ、参加もしてくれました。出会ってから今まで、私のためにこんなにいろいろとサポートしてくださっていて、この出会いに感謝しきれません。

＜Message from Godoy-senseiゴドイ先生からのメッセージ＞

This is a message from her for celebrating the 10th anniversary of Arai Academy.

“Dear Mineko from Arai Academy, it has already been ten years since you began your journey to provide each learner with more appropriate materials and more engaging, meaningful experiences. In this period where appropriate intercultural communication is vital, I look forward to Arai Academy's future initiatives. Mineko, blessed with your innate brightness, strength, and positive attitude, I wish you ever greater success. Please take good care of yourself.”

こちらはArai Academyの10周年のお祝いでいただいたメッセージです。

「新井アカデミー峰子様、学習者一人一人に、より適切な教材を、より興味深く意味ある経験をと、進んでこられてはや10年なのですね。賢い異文化コミュニケーションが大切な今、新井アカデミーの企画が楽しみです。　持ちまえの明るさと、強さと、前向きな姿勢をそなえられた峰子さん、益々のご発展をお祈りいたします。お身体お大事になさいますように。」

＜Prologue最後に＞

Many people have supported my career up to today, and I am deeply grateful to each one of them. Godoy-sensei especially cares for me like family and has devoted herself to me. She is someone who supports me without any expectation of gain or loss.

今までたくさんの人が私のキャリアを支えてくれ、その一人一人に心の底から感謝しています。ただ、ゴドイ先生は家族のように私のことを想い、尽くしてくださっています。損得関係なくサポートしてくれる方です。

It has been 17 years since 2009, and I am who I am today thanks to you. Her attitude as a person makes her more than just a mentor—I call her my benefactor.

2009年から今年で１７年のお付き合いになりますが、先生のお陰で今の私がいます。先生の人としての在り方は「恩師」以上の存在で「恩人」と呼んでいます。

I am truly happy from the bottom of my heart that I've maintained this relationship since the time I felt “It would be nice to work with someone like her.” Of course, I always did my best feeling grateful for every single job she trusted me with. That's probably how such a deep relationship of trust was built.

「あのような人と働けたら」と思った頃から今も関係を続けてもらえ心の底から幸せです。もちろん、いただいた一つ一つの仕事に感謝して、いつも全力で取り組んでいました。それで、このような深い信頼関係ができあがったのかもしれません。

If you have someone you respect right now, please keep doing your best for them with what you can do now. That way, I believe that relationship will last longer.

みなさんも今、尊敬している人がいたら、その人のために今自分ができることを一生懸命続けていってください。そうすれば、その関係がより長く続くと思います。

It is my mission to share with you all the experiences I have had and the lessons I have learned, and to support you going forward.

私は今まで経験し、学ばせてもらったことをこれからは皆さんと共有し、サポートしていくことが使命だと感じています。

I’ve created Master Speaking Japanese, an online self-study Japanese speaking course designed to help individuals learn to speak Japanese on their own, because I wanted the materials I've developed over the past 20 years to be used not only by my students but by many more people, so you can also gain the confidence to speak Japanese.

Master Speaking Japaneseという一人でも日本語が話せるようになるオンライン教材を作ったのも、この20年間私が作ってきた教材を私のレッスンを受けている生徒だけじゃなくて、もっとたくさの人に使って自信を持って話せるようになってほしいと思ったからです。

You might have opportunities to interact with Japanese people while traveling or conducting business. I will support you in enjoying heartfelt communication and interactions with Japanese people. I look forward to keeping supporting you.
