My Story - A Step To The World!

I'd like to share my dream that I want to make my teaching materials created over the last 20 years since lecturing at a UK university available for anyone in the world! . Please see my previous blog about the last 10 years since I started Arai Academy.

I started Arai Academy to make the lessons 100% enjoyable for each student by focusing on their No.1 need, speaking Japanese with confidence. And it makes me happiest when my students share their achievements with me!

My teaching materials with PowerPoint are speaking focused and these are very popular with praise saying, ‘Easy to understand!’ ‘Useful!’’ Fun!’ However, I started thinking that it was not fair when these were limited to only my private students.

Because I wanted to make them available for anyone, I decided to make my PowerPoints into an online self-study course, Master Speaking Japanese. This is my absolute method created from the last 20 years.

First, I'd like to share my student's success story. He achieved to speak confidently with Japanese people in 4 weeks after using the Master Speaking Japanese.

This student was a complete beginner who originally requested private lessons, took a taster lesson and wanted to take online lessons every 2 weeks as he was busy. I recommended Master Speaking Japanese, which is a self-study video lesson with PowerPoints that I’d made, not to have a big-time gap between our lessons.

He didn't even know how to say “konnichiwa (Hello)”, but during the 2 weeks he watched many lesson videos, had a good understanding of the grammar and spoke on his own. In the actual lesson after 2 weeks, I had nothing to teach him because he was able to speak everything he'd studied on his own. He enjoyed accessing the video lessons every day whenever he had time to practise his conversation and was able to continue doing so every day, because each video was about 5 minutes long and he was able to access from any device, making it convenient for him to study during coffee breaks or before he went to bed at night.

He also enjoyed talking about what he did over the weekend in the video call-style conversation tasks with me, and I am glad that I made the video to show him the various photos I took in Japan. He gained confidence from daily practice little by little.

Another student who had studied Japanese for 20 years sometimes with a teacher but couldn't understand how to use particles properly, said he understood finally after using Master Speaking Japanese.  He’s got his pride back! 1. You can take my Japanese lessons wherever whenever

There is a limit number of students who can take my private lessons. I had a growing desire to teach more people, but group lessons are not suitable for each person's pace and needs. So, I started thinking how to make the PowerPoints I use for my private lessons into a video streaming Japanese course. If I could do that, surely people from all over the world would be able to enjoy my lessons.

When you take my lessons on your own, the most important is to learn at your own pace and speak by using the words you need and in the order of basic grammar that you need to use and starting from easier ones. So, whether you are going to Japan on business trip, on holiday, or want to speak Japanese at a local Japanese shop, it's nice to learn with a course that allow you to use basic sentence patterns for any purposes.

This Japanese course can be used from any device, so it's good to take a 5-minute video lesson in your spare time.

2. You can understand clearly and practise speaking Japanese on your own

People who'd self-taught by using other courses said to me the same things like;

“I can't speak…”

“I can't understand grammar…”

“I studied hard but, I can't use Japanese…”

“I've lost confidence…”

Hearing this made me feel very sad, and I was determined to 'definitely support everyone who is studying so hard' like you!

I've kept improving the quality of my teaching materials, and my students said “It's easy to understand! I can speak!" so, I decided to make these PowerPoint presentations available for learners all over the world. I thought about a lot of ideas to make conversation-based lessons for self-teaching. I wanted to make the content 100% satisfying by learning on your own and help you to speak with confidence.

My core teaching methods built over my 20 years of experience are (1) ‘Mind = Expressions’ for grammar and expression, (2) ‘Culture Based-Leaning’ as an approach, which means that our thoughts become our expressions and once you understand the Japanese mindset, you can understand how to use phrases more naturally, and (3) ‘Learn by speaking’ as a learning method. Saying the phrases out loud helps you to deepen your understanding of the usage in a certain situation also to remember them easily.

For example, the expression “onegai shimasu” is a phrase Japanese people use to their teacher and colleagues in our daily life, but there's no such expression in English. Once you understand this Japanese mindset, you will be able to use it naturally in various situations.

Once you follow these points (1) to (3) together with expressions relevant for your life, You'll be able to say what you want to say!

3. You can speak Japanese every day and build your confidence

Isn't it wonderful if you can master each Japanese phrase, one by one, and can feel ‘I've got it!’ This will give you confidence!

In order to make you feel that way, each lesson contains 5 steps; (1) a grammar introduction video, (2) a speaking practice video, (3) a model conversation video between native Japanese teachers, (4) a conversation challenge video with me, and finally (5) a quiz to check your understanding of the lesson. Each video is about 5 minutes long, and you learn by speaking. I use my photos I took in Japan such as some food I had, so I’m sure you’ll enjoy learning with them.

Also, it is essential to practise speaking by yourself many times before speaking with native Japanese speakers. When I was learning English, I repeated a lot on my own and prepared for any chances to speak with a native. This is the same as practising a musical instrument alone every single day before performing in an orchestra.

4. Learning support from a professional Japanese teacher

When you study Japanese, it's totally different from the method that works when you study French or Spanish. So, you’ll receive advice tailored to your learning style by focusing on more suitable learning methods and you can study Japanese effectively.

今回は私がイギリスの大学で教え始めた2０年前から作りはじめ、磨き続けてきた教材を世界中のみなさんに届けたいという夢を共有したいと思います。Arai Academyを始めてからの10年間については前回のブログをご覧ください。

生徒一人一人が１００％楽しめるレッスンを目指して10年前にArai Academyを始め、日本語が話せるようになりたいという生徒たちと成功を喜び合うことが一番の幸せです。ただ、「わかりやすい！」「役に立つ！」「楽しい！」と言ってもらえる自作のパワーポイントの教材が私のプライベートレッスンが受けられる人に限られてしまうのは不公平だと感じるようになりました。それで、世界中のみなさんが使える教材として届けられたらと思うようになり、Master Speaking Japaneseというオンライン教材を作りました。この私の20年間の集大成です。

まずはこの教材使って4週間で自信を持って日本人と話せるようになった生徒の成功例をご紹介します。

Master Speaking Japaneseで勉強した生徒の成功例

この生徒はゼロ・ビギナーで、もともとプライベートレッスンを希望してお試しレッスンを受け、忙しいので2週間に1回オンラインレッスンを受けたいと言っていました。この2週間の間にレベルが上げられるように、私が作ったパワーポイントを独学用にレッスン動画に作り替えたMaster Speaking Japaneseを勧めました。

「こんにちは」も知らないレベルでしたが、この2週間の間に一人でたくさんのレッスン動画を見て、話して、文法がしっかりと理解できていました。実際のレッスンでは一人で勉強したことが全て話せるようになっていたので、私が教えることは何もありませんでした。この生徒も嬉しそうでしたが、「この教材は一人でも文法が１００％わかって、話せるようになる！」と実感でき、私もとても嬉しかったです。

ちょうどこの生徒がMaster Speaking Japaneseを使い始めてから4週間後にArai Academyのパーティーがあったので、この時、初めてこの生徒に会いました。日本人と自己紹介したり、持ってきてくれたトルコ料理を提供したり、自信を持って日本人と話していたのを見て、とても感動しました。もちろん、この生徒もパーティーで日本人と話せて楽しかったと言っていました。

Master Speaking Japaneseはレストランでの注文や、買い物の場面など、ロンドンの日本の店でも使える内容だったので、とてもモチベーションが上がったようです。毎日時間があるといつもこの教材にアクセスして、会話練習を楽しんでいたそうです。1回のビデオが5分ぐらいでどのデバイスからでもアクセスできるので、コーヒーブレイクや夜寝る前などにも学べるという便利さもあって、毎日続けることができたようです。

また、私とのビデオ通話のような会話タスクでは、週末したことを話す練習など私が日本で撮った写真がいろいろ見られるので本当の会話のようで、やる気につながり楽しかったようで良かったです。

この生徒は毎日すこしずつ学んで、レベルアップしてると感じられて、自信がついたようです。他にももう20年日本語を勉強したのに日本語の先生に習っても助詞の使い方がわからなかったという生徒もMaster Speaking Japaneseを使ったらよくわかったと言って、喜んでくれました。日本に行く前の準備としてMaster Speaking Japaneseを始めた生徒は日本での会話を楽めたそうです。今は「この20年間作り続けてきた教材が世界中のみなさんの役に立ったらどんなに素敵だろう！」という気持ちでいっぱいです。

皆さんが一人で私のレッスンを受けるときに大切なことは、自分のペースで自分に必要な単語でやさしいものから順に基本の文法を使って話せるようになることですね。それで、ビジネスで日本に行く、旅行で日本に行く、近所の日本の店で日本人と日本語で話したい、などどんな目的でも基本の文型が使える教材がいいですね。

オンライン教材で、どのデバイスからも使えるので、空いた時間に5分ほどのレッスン動画を受けるのもいいですね。

2 一人でも理解できて話せる

従来の独学教材を使っていた人たちが同じようなことを言っていました。

「話すことできない」

「文法がわからない」

「がんばっても、できない」

「自信がなくなった」

これを聞いて、とても悲しくなりましたが、私はそんな「頑張っている皆さんを絶対にサポートする！」と決意しました。

今までずっと改善し続けてきた「わかりやすい！」「話せた！」と評判の自作のパワーポイントを世界中のみなさんに使えるようにデザインしようと考えました。独学で会話を中心にした内容にするまでにいろいろなアイデアを考え抜きました。独学でも１００％生徒が満足できる内容で、自信を持って話せるようになってほしという願いでデザインしました。

私の20年の経験から自然と軸になっていた教え方は、文法表現は①Mind = Expressions、アプローチとしては②Culture Based-Leaningで、日本人の感性を知ればフレーズの使い方がわかるということ、 学び方は③Learn by speaking で実際に口に出してみることで自分が使う場面での理解が深まり、覚えやすくもなります。

例えば、「おねがいします」という表現は日本人が毎日、先生や同僚に使う言葉ですが、英語にはない表現ですね。この日本人の心がわかると、いろいろな場面で自然に使えるようになります。

この①から③のポイントを軸にしてみなさん一人一人に必要な表現を一緒に使うと、自分が伝えたいことが話せるようになります。

3 毎日話して自信を付ける

日本語のフレーズを一つ一つ、完全にマスターして、「できた！」と感じられたら最高ですよね。これが自信につながっていきますからね。

それで、1つのレッスンの中に５つのステップ、①文法表現の動画、②それを使って話す練習の動画、③日本人の先生同士のモデル会話の動画、④みなさんが私と会話にチャレンジする動画、最後に⑤クイズでこのレッスンの理解を最終確認するという流れです。どの動画も5分ぐらいで、話しながら学びます。私が日本で食べた料理の写真なども使っていて、楽しく学べると思います。

また、実際にネイティブの日本人と話す前に一人で何回も話す練習をしておくことは必須です。私も英語を学んでいた時、一人でたくさんリピートして、チャンスが来た時のために練習しておきました。これは、オーケストラで発表する前に、一人で毎日練習しておくのと同じですね。

どうやって一人で話す練習をしたらいいかわからない人も多いと思うので、効果的に毎日私とQ&Aで話す練習ができる内容にしました。このように一歩一歩着実に身に付けられるようにでデザインし、ようやく3年がかりで今のMaster Speaking Japaneseが出来上がりました。

４ 学習サポートが受けられる

従来の独学教材と違い、私がみなさんの勉強をサポートするオンラインのイベントLearning Caféにも参加できます。

日本語を勉強するとき、フランス語やスペイン語を勉強する方法ではマスターできません。この学び方の違いにフォーカスして、日本語を効果的に勉強できるように、皆さんの学び方に合ったアドバイスが受けられます。

発音をチェックしたり、フレーズの覚え方などネイティブの先生にチェックしてほしいときがあると思います。なんでも聞いて、学びをスピードアップしてください。

プライベートの生徒は平均6年ぐらい一緒に勉強していますが、長く続けられる一番の理由はいつもレッスン以外の時間に一人でどう勉強したらいいかもサポートがあるからだと思います。
