My Story - Why I started Arai Academy of Japanese Studies

In this post, I’d like to share the story of how I came to start Arai Academy of Japanese Studies, as well as some of the milestones and student successes we’ve achieved over the past ten years.

今回は私がArai Academy of Japanese Studiesを始めようと思ってから、この10年間について、活動内容と目標達成してきた生徒たちのストーリーを紹介したいと思います。私がイギリスの大学と外務省で教えていた時の話は前回のブログをご覧ください。

Imagine if every lesson left you saying, “That was so much fun!” or, “I can’t wait to try using what I learned today!” That’s the kind of lesson I always aim to deliver. If students can talk about what interests them and use the most useful expressions in ways that make them feel like real communicators - that’s what makes language learning meaningful. Watching students express themselves more and more confidently and leave each lesson with a smile is one of my greatest joys.

Let me start by sharing just one of many success stories.

One British student had never studied a foreign language before, but after becoming a senior executive at the Dentsu Group, he started traveling to Japan every month. He wanted to create a trustworthy relationship with Japanese colleagues, so he decided to start learning Japanese. 

Despite a demanding schedule filled with international meetings and speeches, we focused on only the most essential and practical expressions, starting from the simplest grammar. I used my signature PowerPoint grammar slides to guide our lessons, and he said the visuals with meaningful situations helped make things much easier to understand. That built his confidence in speaking, which made me very happy.

I also taught him how to study efficiently outside of lessons, even with a tight schedule, which helped him stay on track between sessions.

After six months, he met with a British friend living in Japan, who was shocked and said, “I’ve never met someone who could speak Japanese this well after just six months!” Seeing how proud and happy he was truly touched my heart. Moments like these - where we can share in the joy of real achievement - are the reason I do what I do.

These successes come not only from professional goals, but also from students traveling to Japan, discovering new passions, or being moved by the depth of Japanese culture and thought. I’m grateful for every one of these shared moments of growth. Good materials and methods matter, but what matters even more is providing the support students need to keep going, no matter their circumstances.

毎回のレッスンで、１００％「楽しかった！」、習った表現を早く「使ってみたい！」と思えるようなレッスンが受けられたら、どうですか？　私はそのようなレッスンを目指し、教えています。自分の興味があることが話せて、一番使えそうな表現をどんどん使って、「コミュニケーションができた！」と思えたら、すてきですね。実際に生徒たちが毎回のレッスンで活き活きと自分が言いたいことを表現して、レッスンの終わりには満足そうな表情が見られるのが心からの幸せです。

まずは生徒たちのたくさんある成功例の1つだけ紹介したいと思います。

あるイギリス人の生徒は言語学習をぜんぜんしたことがなかったんですが、電通グループの上役になった時、毎月日本に出張することになり、日本人との関係やコミュニケーションをスムーズにするために簡単な日本語ができた方がいいと考え、レッスンを始めました。

日本とアメリカの間で仕事をしていて、本当に忙しい生徒だったので、ミーティングやスピーチで一番役立つ表現だけを一番やさしい文法から教えました。レッスンでは私がいつも使う文法のパワーポイントを見て、話しながら学ばせたら、わかりやすいと言ってくれて、スピーキングの自信につながったようで嬉しかったです。レッスン以外の時間に忙しくても勉強できる方法を伝えたので、復習も頑張ってくれて、次のレッスンがスムーズに進みました。

6か月たった頃、日本に住んでいるイギリス人の友だちに会ったそうで、「6か月でこんなに日本語ができる人に会ったことがない！」と言われて心から喜んでいる姿を見て、私もとても感激しました。生徒と喜びを共有し合えることが生きがいです。

このような感動を共に味わえる話はビジネスだけでなく、日本に旅行した時の体験、趣味での日本語学習から日本人の考え方に感動したりと数え切れませんが、このような達成感を共に味わえることに感謝しています。いい教材やいい教え方も大切ですが、どんな状況でも勉強が続けられるようにサポートをしてあげることが何よりも大切にしていることです。

Why I Started Arai Academy

Back when I was teaching group lessons at universities, I always aimed to create a class where every single student felt satisfied and engaged. I tried many different approaches to make this happen, but it wasn’t easy. Students have different interests, learning speeds, and goals. Of course, group classes do offer wonderful opportunities for peer interaction, which is important too.

At the same time, my one-to-one lessons at the Foreign Office and in private sessions allowed me to fully tailor each lesson to the student. This felt completely aligned with what I believed Japanese lessons should be. I remember thinking, “This is it. This is what I want to do.”

I also started meeting learners who didn’t need a university degree in Japanese, but who still wanted to study seriously. Some were willing to invest in one-on-one lessons to reach a higher level, and I was deeply moved by their passion and motivation. Around ten years ago, there weren’t many professional Japanese teachers offering personalized lessons like this, so I wanted to meet that need.

I have so much respect for the university lecturers who dedicate themselves to supporting degree-seeking students. When I was asked to stay on at SOAS and King’s College, it was a very hard decision to leave. But I had decided to follow my own path as a Japanese teacher.

I also wanted to give students more opportunities to interact with native Japanese speakers. At SOAS, I started “visitor sessions” twice a year, where students practiced their conversation tasks with Japanese guests. At King’s, I helped create a conversation partner program. These were great experiences, but they weren’t year-round systems with consistent feedback.

So, little by little, I began to envision something new: a place where professional Japanese teachers could offer one-on-one lessons, and where learners could practice regularly with native speakers. That vision became Arai Academy.

Arai Academyを始めたきっかけ

大学でグループレッスンの生徒たちがみんな１００％満足できるようなレッスンを目指して準備にいろいろ工夫して毎回臨みましたが、人によって興味やペースなどが違い、これを実現することは簡単ではありませんでした。もちろん、グループレッスンでクラスメイトと交流できるのはとてもいい面ですね。

その間、外務省やプライベートでのレッスンは1対1で、その時に生徒のために１００％合わせてレベルを引き上げることができたので、本来私が日本語のレッスンで目標にしていることと合っていて、「これだ！」と思いました。

また、大学で学位を取らなくても日本語を学びたい人、グループレッスンではなく、高くても1対1で習ってレベルを上げたいという人たちに出会い、このような情熱とやる気をサポートしたいと思うようになりました。今から10年前は日本語教師があまりいなかった時代で、このようなニーズに応えたかったんですね。大学で日本語の学位を目指している生徒たちのために教えていらっしゃる先生方には本当に敬意を感じます。SOASやキングスカレッジの上司に引き留められ、本当に心苦しかったです。ただ、私は自分の日本語教師としての道を歩もうと決意しました。

そして、生徒たちが日本人と話す機会も作ってあげたいと思い、ＳＯＡＳで年に2回レッスンで日本人と会話タスクをするビジターセッション、キングスカレッジでは会話のパートナーを見つけるシステムを実施しましたが、私が1年を通して実施し、定期的にフィードバックをしてあげるシステムではありませんでした。

このような流れで、プロの先生は大学でしか教えていなかった時代に自然と1対1のプライベートレッスンや毎月日本人と話せる機会を作れたらいいなと思うようになりました。これがArai Academyを始めるきっかけになりました。

Building Arai Academy

When I launched Arai Academy in July 2015, I was immediately invited to teach at the Japanese section of the British Museum, which was such an honour. I’m still connected with the staff there today.

Private students also started asking me to teach at their workplaces, which led to direct contracts with companies like SONY and Deloitte in London. Visiting their offices to teach became a valuable and memorable part of my teaching journey. Today, I still meet some of those students for lunch - these are relationships that continued even after their courses ended. These connections remind me just how meaningful starting Arai Academy has been.

Students often tell me that the PowerPoint slides I created are clear, practical, and full of useful real-life situations. Some even take photos during lessons to review later, which makes me so happy. Since Japanese is so different from other languages, I also provide guidance on how to study effectively outside of lessons. Many students have said that having this kind of ongoing support has really helped them stay on track.

In August 2015, I launched a monthly event called “Learning Japanese Through Conversation.” We invited Japanese people living in London to join us, and it became incredibly popular. Every session had a theme for discussion, and participants would rotate partners every 20 minutes, creating dynamic conversations and fresh perspectives.

We also had seasonal events: hanami (cherry blossom viewing) in a Japanese garden in April, an anniversary party in July, and a Christmas gathering in December. I was so happy to see everyone enjoying authentic, joyful interactions with Japanese speakers.

These events have continued online (Learning Session in Japanese & English)—even through the pandemic—and I can hardly believe we’ll be celebrating Arai Academy’s 10th anniversary this July. It fills me with joy and gratitude.

I’ve also created an online Japanese course called Master Speaking Japanese. I decided to share my handmade PowerPoint grammar slides on video lessons. All my students find them really helpful for learning expressions and practising speaking with visuals in a variety of meaningful situations. 

Now, you can access them! This video course helps you speak practical Japanese with vocabulary that’s relevant to you. It’s designed to get students speaking confidently in as little as 4 weeks, and it’s based on the same methods and materials as my 1-to-1 lessons.

活動の広がり

2015年の7月に始めてから、すぐに大英博物館の日本のセクションで教える機会をいただいて、今でもここのスタッフとつながりがあり、とてもありがたいことです。また、プライベートの生徒の中には自分が勤めている会社で教えてほしいという依頼があり、ロンドンにあるSONYやDeloitteなどからも直接契約をいただき会社に出向いて教えたこともとてもいい経験になりました。この時から今も時々ランチをしたりする生徒がいるんですが、コース修了後もこのような生徒たちとの関係が続き、Arai Academyを始めて良かったと実感しています。

また、私が作ったパワーポイントの教材がとても分かりやすく、場面も役に立つと言ってくれ、よく写真を撮ってレッスンの後に役立っているようで嬉しいです。また、日本語の学び方はスピーキング、単語、漢字まで他の言語とは全く学び方が違うので、いつもレッスン以外にも効果的に勉強する方法も教えてサポートが受けられるのが助かっているそうです。

2015年の8月には「日本語で学ぶ会」を毎月のイベントにし、ロンドンにいる日本人を呼んで生徒たちが日本語で話す機会を作ったら、とても人気でたくさんの生徒や日本人が参加してくれました。毎回、皆さんが話したいトピックを決めて、会話をし、２０分に一回パートナーを変えたので、いろいろな人と意見交換ができて良かったようです。4月にはロンドンの日本庭園でお花見をしたり、7月にはArai Academyの1周年パーティー、12月にはクリスマスパーティーなど、皆さん日本人との交流を楽しんでくれて本当に嬉しいです。

「日本人と会話ができた！」と感じられる機会を作ってあげることも私がとても大切にしていることです。これはコロナ中も今もオンラインで続いているイベント(日本語で学ぶ会＆英語で学ぶ会)で、おかげさまで今年の7月には10周年のパーティーができることが信じられない喜びです。

また、独自に作成したパワーポイントをプライベートレッスンの生徒だけでなく、世界中の人に役立ててもらい、日本人との会話が楽しいと思ってもらえたらと願い、Master Speaking Japaneseというオンライン教材を作りました。
